+ noise and vibrations on cold starts...
« on: March 22, 2007, 11:14:51 am »
as topic says...
what should i look for to change this?
the car start at first crank,no smoke on start up(well, some smoke but it as some mods so its normal) and after the temp reach normal on tacho it idles fine.
i am using AGIP 10W40 oil now.
just on cold it makes more of the clac clac noise and strugles a lot.
with the door open the door really shakes bad...

pushing the cold start lever helps to smooth it out but not enought for what it was normal to do.

what to look for?
change the oil viscosity?glow plugs?bad injectors?pump timing?

Hi there... how cold is cold ??  What year is your diesel ??  Any idea how the compression is ??  When the timing was last adjusted ??

when i say colds is not that cold for you...lets say...10š celcius.
the engine was a 1.6d that was fully rebuilted and upgraded to turbo diesel.
the compression is fine and the timing was done about 1 year ago.

turning up your cold idle helps, when these motors are cold they idle much lower which creates more vibrations

I turned my idle up everytime it comes back from the shop because it is always set too low for me.  I probably have it at 900 or 1000 rpm.  It sure keeps the dash from rattling but the idle does seem a bit high at stop lights and may add to less mpg, but it saves the dash.

the idle is at the same rpm but the engige strugles more...
if i pull the cold lever a bit the rpm keeps the same but it doesent struggle so much.

the idle got worse (on stock setup was great, started at first,no smoke,no shakes...)the moment i messed with the pump for more fuel but it was better then now...

some friend said glow plugs...

Yup, assuming your compression is good and your timing is good (might be worth checking... even advance it a little bit) then glow plugs is something to check.  I'd expect hard starts and more smoke at startup if you're missing a plug or two however.

My idle is set about 1000 RPM otherwise it shakes a bit too much for my liking... never actually seen one at spec (850).

Another possibility is poor engine mounts... all diesels produce vibration, particularly at low speeds, and if one or more engine mounts are worn it can seem much worse than it really is.

Always hard to diagnose noises over the internet but again all diesels make more noise when cold... particularly the older IDIs.  I actually like the rattle myself.

thatīs the problem...it starts at first crank!
usually no smoke idling so i dont think that bad glow plugs are the culprit

just feels rougher and makes more noise.

it could be a few different things.   you have to remember that the engine is really loose on a cold start (and pretty damn loud too!) so obviously the motor will be bucking a little bit.

bad motor mounts can cause the vibrations too...  i would also have to agree that keeping the idle higher to avoid vibrations is a good idea.  just imagine what those vibrations are doing to the chassis, and engine mounts! probably hastening their demise for sure!!

i'm going to be installing a lift pump soon... maybe that will get rid of my low idle vibrations??? hmmm

well, i am going to put some 2T sintetic oil mixed in the diesel to lube the pump, maybe it helps...

just the engine sound a lot more louder than what souded before so its not normal...

that noise, the CLAC CLAC CLAC  that are trade mark of older diesels...that is the sound that now its louder on cold start that what used to be :x
