Tranny swap questions.
« on: December 05, 2004, 02:40:12 am »
I'm interested in a caddy I found locally, gas 4 speed though.  I know of a 1.6 idi engine that I can get. And I have a 5 speed out of an 86 8v gti. What does it take to put the a2 5 speed onto the diesel engine and into the truck?
Is it ok to empty the tank and use the existing supply hose for diesel? Can't remember if a2 cv shafts will work in an a1 either. The golf had new shafts.

Thanks for the input.
Mike

I would imagine using a gasoline tank for diesel wouldn't hurt it that much, as in the manual it says you may add gasoline in case of emergency.  Diesel in a gasoline engine however, isn't as forgiving (blows god knows how many parts)

as for the tranny swap I have no clue, but I know my mechanic would.  Its definitely possible to do the swap, maybe a few parts or whatnot.  Don't forget to put in a new clutch while its out  :D

you might want to look at where the pick up line goes for the gas tank.  On the diesels it's at the bottom, and some of the gas cars had it at the top with a transfer pump inside the tank.  This might be a problem if you are converting the tank to diesel.  I think there are a lot of old diesel caddys rusting away in various junk yards so you might be able to score a diesel tank somewhere.  For the transmission I think that the drive shaft flanges are the same but you should check.  I am going by the ones on my AGS in my jetta, which are the same as the ones that were in the tranny in my 5spd 1979 rabbit.  Linkage will be different though.  4spd linkage and 5spd linkage are not the same.  I think you need to drill a hole somewhere to put the 5spd linkage in.  I believe the clutches and flywheels are interchangeable (someone told me that on another web site).  Also there will probably be an issue with the wiring for the back up lights, and the speedo cable gear might be different on the two trannys so your speedometer will give the wrong reading.  Other than that it should fit.  You will have to pretty much completely change the electrical system as the diesel and gas engines are different.  Depending on the injection pump you get you might need to fabricate some wiring for the electric devices on the pump.  Also you'll need to install some sort of glow plug timing system (or just put a light switch and glow it yourself).

Have fun
