My first Diesel

Well after monthes of searching, I've finally found my diesel.  She's a one owner car with over 700K on her.  She was built in december of 1985, as a Jetta GL.  PW, PD manual steering, factory foglights, tachometer, factory alloys and sunroof delete.  Everything other than oil changes was done by the dealer (Autohaus of Windsor.  Windsor VW didn't exist back then!!!), til the warranty expired, and then all service was brought to Heinz garage, or parts were bought from Heinz garage and  installed by the previous owner in his garage.  She was oil sprayed yearly, and never parked outside.  Have every receipt for everything ever done...








Unfortunately, I came upon her as a result of a failed head gasket job.  The head gasket was correctly installed and the car reassembled, but the head itself finally had come to the end of the road.  So I plan to replace the head (thanks VWvortex) and reassemble her to drive as my daily...

turbo inlet, minimal shaft play.  I've got a rebuilt replacement on the bench.

once I slap a new head on yes.  I'm a VW mechanic by trade.  I've seen plenty of horror stories from cars without covers.  I've got gauges, an intercooler and plumbing, intake manifold turbo and a few other items for the car(I've been collecting TD "performance parts" for about 6 monthes now)

As per bentley manual using VW210(TV0 210 000 00 ZEL) should read between 12-13.  Then tighten to 33ft-lbs.

Ah but what does that 12 to 13 mean converted to a pull on a fish scale 10mm deflection.... As a miser I refuse (can't afford) to buy a 'VW210'

Maybe this information is as guarded as Bosche data...

we don't use a vw210 either.  I've always used the 45deg belt twist method myself...if the tensioner whines it's too tight.
