wastegate problems - what are my options
« on: March 24, 2007, 08:32:50 pm »
Hello all,

I have an 85 jetta TD engine running in a vanagon of the same year.

great little ride. anyhow my wastegate is fixed open and so no pressure builds to wind the turbo.

All options so far point to rebuild- replace entire turbo.

all for this tiny component. The turbine is in fine shape.

Also i just got a new head.

anyhow i've heard that i may be able to seal off the wastegate and rely on
the Blow off valve to regulate dangerous psi.

any help would be greatly appreciated. as of now the turbo is off and wating to be put back on ..

Cheers

So what's the main problem? Are you missing the wastegate actuator?

hmmmm i wouldn't rely on the BOV to regulate boost pressure.  I spike 20 psi regularly and it doesn't seem to be too bad for the motor.

when the BOV opens it will drop your boost to around 3-4 psi then close... not such a great idea!

if you can take off the turbo, maybe you can get it unstuck with a lot of penetrating lube.

i've even sprayed some penetrating lube into my wastegate pressure intake...

as you can see, some penetrating lube may help in getting the stuck valve free'd... now if the sealing surface is full of carbon, the only thing that will loosen it up is to actually take off the turbo and use a lot of degreaser and pressure spraying (probably best at this point to remove the turbine so as not to bend, break the valves)

edit not break valves but break the turbine blades... man i was... err am tired

Is the Valve in the Garrett replaceable?  I picked up a good cheap turbo but the wastegate was stuck.  After disassembly, they wastegate valve is slightly bent.  Can I get a new one somewhere?  Most of the rebuild kits I see do not have them, as most T3's use the "newer" style swing-gate.  TIA!

Thank you all or your responses. I really appreciate the input.

I'm going to try and post picts of the turbo so as to see if anyone can figure out what turbo I'm actually running. I cant' tell. I've got a S/N and Part #

and that's about all.

thanks libbybapa!

I've been wondering. So,,,, How hard will it be to replace it with the unit you were recommending above? How will the performance be different/ better?

Thanks again for your input. I don't know why my pictures won't load anymore, but I hope you were able to see them. or did you figure it out from the serial #'s

Cheers

Sorry for threadjacking but, does anyone know which turbo this is supposed to be? I thought I was supposed to have a k24 in my 84' 1.6l, but the wastegate assembly looks a bit different then in Jake's K24 disassembly thread. My wastegate looks like the one above, and I'm not sure how to remove it. Thanks.

I just took mine apart the other day.  If you look down at the "hat" of the wastegate, you will notice a compression ring around the outer diameter that holds the top piece in- It almost looks like a compressed spring, with a taper on the end.  Basically a really big snap ring.  You can get a small flat-tipped screwdriver on that taper, and pull it out of the "groove" that the ring rides in, and slowly work it out all the way around.  Once it's out, the top will pull right off.  Next, you need to have the cover plate on the outlet side of the turbine housing removed, all 4 of the studs on mine snapped.  :P  Now, you will be looking at the bottom of the wastegate valve, it will have a fitting for an allen key in it.  You will need to hold the valve with the allen, then slowly turn off the nut on the top of the wastegate diaphragm.  It is under a little spring pressure, so be careful when it comes off.  Not much to it really.

Thanks a ton! I saw the allen key, but it didn't seem to do much. I guess I have to clean more to notice the ring. Only 3 of my studs snaped off though.

Yeah, there was a layer of black sludgey crap in the groove.  The highlighted area shows where you can see the ring, only looking down on it instead:

Mine came out easily enough though.  Still trying to figure out what to do about the bent valve....

Edit:  I have no idea what the hell is wrong, I cant post images anymore.  Oh well!
