Bosch TD Injection Pump Identification help needed
« on: March 16, 2007, 02:52:45 pm »
This is also posted in the FAQ/Tech etc.... section

Alright, I got some spare time between working, changing diapers and trying to finish off a basement remodel, to start working on my TD build. I pulled one of the IP's off, and cleaned up the id plate on the other to pull the numbers off. I cant seem to use the product decypher/ID that you posted Dave in order to figure out what I have.

Dave wrote:

Example:
V E 4 / 9 F 2400 L 12

V: Distributor injection pump
E: Axial piston high pressure pump or R: radial piston high pressure pump
2-6: Number of high pressure outlets
8-12: Pump plunger diameter in mm.
F: Mechanical governor or E: Electric actuator mechanism or M: high pressure solenoid valve.
2400: Upper pump nominal speed (half of engine rpm)
L: Counter clockwise or R: Clockwise (view toward pump drive)
12: Type code.

Once I get the new digital camera software loaded on the computer I will add some pics.
Here's what I have:
I am not sure what year these came out of, one may be a 92.

Pump #1

NR 0 460 494 182
R 223 BT 4007
VW/Audi 068 130 130 081F
015 644 39515

Pump #2

NR 0 460 494 162
VE R 188
VW/Audi 068 130 110H
011 541 189 68

Gonna do some more searching, and more head scratching.  I am trying to determine which is the best pump for the Giles mod.

Thanks, Jim

If you read my post below Dave's you will find a link to the bosch e-cat which allows you to type in your number and convert it to a number you can decode using Dave's post.

Came up with the correct input.
Pump #1
0 460 494 182 = VE 4/9 F2250 R 223
V:      Distributor injection pump
E:      Axial piston high pressure pump
4:      Number of high pressure outlets
9:      Pump plunger diameter in mm.
F:      Mechanical governor
2250: Upper pump nominal speed (half of engine rpm)
R:    Clockwise (view toward pump drive)
223:  Type code.
This one has the long screw that runs down to the cold start lever.
the LDA looks like this one:

Pump #2
0 460 494 162  =  VE 4/9 F 2250 R 186

V:       Distributor injection pump
E:       Axial piston high pressure pump
4:       Number of high pressure outlets
9:       Pump plunger diameter in mm.
F:       Mechanical governor
2250: Upper pump nominal speed (half of engine rpm)
R:     Clockwise (view toward pump drive)
186:   Type code
This one has what looks like a normal cold start lever, no screw. LDA looks like this:

The only difference in the numbers is the Type code.  Is this how you figure out the difference in the camplate?

SO, back to the original question.  Which one do you think is the best canidate to send up north to Mr. Super pump?  And just to be clear, those photo's are not my actual pumps.  I was using them to show the different LDA tops mine have.  This will be going onto a 1.6 block/ 1.9 head td combo. Will be boring out cyl. to 2nd or 3rd overbore.  The head will be going up the Pass Perf for a Port and Polish. Dave, I will be contacting you shortly.

Whats the diff with the cold start lever? One pump has some additional hardware with a long screw going down to the cold start lever. The second one looks like a standard cable pull.

Peter, how did you figure out that they have different camplates? Which one is better/bigger?  Is it the Type code you are pulling that info from? If so please fill me in on how to decipher.

Thanks, Jim

Named Tintin told me that the number at the end denotes which camplate is used in the pump, meaning the 3 numbers after the R.

Humm !!  I do not think of having said that, I do not know that want to say exactly the 3 last number, what is on, that known as on which vehicule, year, etc.... the pump is installed.
