Turbo'ing a 1.6NA - Where to start?
« on: March 16, 2007, 09:05:39 am »
Ok, so it seems i have a pretty good turbo candidate.  It's heading to the machine shop for an inspection and rebuild Monday, but I need to figure out what, if anything, else to do based on my plans to turbo this motor.

I know I'll need the manifold, turbo, intercooler, and turbo pump, but I'll confess to being a total newbie when it comes to these motors. I've a good understanding of the process, but a poor working knowledge of the parts necessary.

Specifically, i need to know:

Manifold year to buy?
Turbo?  I live at sea level
Pump?  which one?
Intercooler? I've heard from the turbo volvo's but anyone else have sucess with a better setup?

Also, if you've experience with this conversion, I'd love to hear from you. I can't get enough of this board but there's so much info sometimes it's hard to wade through.

TIA!

Check my forsale post in the classifieds, I have 90% of what you need.

here's a quick list of what you need

- both manifolds
- air intake
- EGT gauge
- boost gauge
- oil lines
- turbo
- downpipe (not needed for mk2s)
- oil filter flange
- oil pan
- oil cooler

What is recommended:
- intercooler
- TD pump w/ TD injectors (more power)
- larger exhaust (lower EGT)
- performance cam (lower EGT)

Buying any of the above parts from a mk1/2/3 (pre TDI) should be good.
mk3 turbos require mk3 manifolds (same style turbo to same style manifolds) mk1 and mk2 can be swapped around, oil lines might be different
You'll probably want a small turbo like a K03, K14 or a T3 (I think) because you won't be running high boost (if you like your engine) and these produce quick spooling and good temperatures up to 15psi at least (I think)

The best pump (from what I hear) is one from a 91-92 TD but any 1.6l IDI pump will work without mods
