Just for fun!
« on: March 02, 2007, 03:10:55 pm »
I recently got bored and decided to install a jumber wire with a toggle switch to the fuel shut off soleniod to the battery.  This allows me to flip the switch, turn the ignition off and still have it run.  Kinda of nice in winter when you want it to stay warm inside while you go grocery shopping!

Thats not a rod knockin..........its a diesel!

umm... just for a couple of minutes though right??? leaving your car idle just to keep it warm would just be a waste of fuel wouldn't it??? still a pretty neat idea though!

a while back i have been looking for a coolant thermos system like that of the toyota prius.  that system would be the best to keep the engine warm! shut off motor, and coolant is pumped into the thermos... start engine and coolant is pumped back through the motor!

yeah i guess you could say it does waste fuel, but a coulpe weeks ago we had -20 below weather and this feature was really nice at that time, so i didn;t really care if i was wasting fuel, and besides just how much can our stock n/a's burn at idle for 15 minutes?

well for those temps... yea for the extra litre or two of fuel used... definitely worth it!!!  not to mention starting the motor causes wear in itself...

well that brings up a good question. How much fuel does a 1.6 NA burn at operating temperature at idle? how many L/h? or G/h? If you install a SVO kit you wouldnt even be dumping as much nasty stuff into the air! anyone have any numbers?

Engine died, pulling it apart, putting something new in it's place.

I've noticed sometimes if you leave em idling overnight, the fan will kill the battery...

My thought on this system is to hook the switch through a relay grounded via the handbrake switch, so if somone tries to take the car it will stall before they have an embarrasing accident in your name.

hehe pretty neat trick with the e-brake idea...  sounds like a pretty bad charging system if the fan is constantly cycling like that...  i would have never thought that could happen hmmm...
