I'm running a wastegated turbo at the moment... on a 1z/AHU configuration though.
Why mechanical? Maybe the PURE Simplicity. To me, it was alot of things. Wanting to keep things strong yet simple, not wanting to have custom maps/chips burned for every significant change I made, wanting to be able to use all the old style MK1 gauges *still workin on the tach to work with my optical setup*.
The electronics are nice...might compensate better for altitude changes, max mpg per gallon, etc. but you just can't beat a one wire hookup and its just that much cleaner because of it. Other reasons too, just too many to list right here....right now.
There is def. a divided line out there of those that like the electronic versions and those that convert to mechanical.

hmmm i understand, aligator kit made that real simple. im ganna have to talk to him and see if i can buy a cheap ecu flasher and use his tuning. i think that would be the PERFECT solution

sounds like maybe for you it would be. Its all a matter of preference. The fact that I didn' t have the ECU/harness to work with as well when I first bought my motor was a HUGE thing too. Locating one w/ a pedal assembly would have been another 400.00 venture or so with the current prices. Paid 900.00 for the motor alone, without tranny... so, I was doing something different as well. Last year there were very few mTDI around, up and running. So it paid off...since, alot more have sprang up. I can think of 3or maybe 4 on this board in particular that have been up for more than a year...thats about it. Each and everyone a bit different. Here I believe, I was the first to use the 4bt pump successfully... like I said...all a matter of preference and how you like to tune

I'm still on the same tank that I filled up with earlier in the fall...averaging about 55mpg on the current setup in the mk1 by my calcs unless my fuel gauge is seriously lying.
Hillfolk has had similar results if I remember correctly. If you get into it more, it'd probably be less than if electronically controlled...even with cruising on the highway, etc. but I wouldn't say by more than 1-3mpg if even that...
IMHO... don't have imperical evidence, blah blah to back it up at the moment

The thing I hate about electronic pumps is that I can't just tune them however I want whenever I want, I wouldn't be happy about anyone tuning my engine except myself.

I second that. its exactly why i went mechanical, seems tuning the ecus of the tdis yourself can be expensive? they are eeproms correct? thats what i love about my setup for my s10, laptop on the pass seat with logging software and a usb plug into the aldl port under the dash, thrash it around the neighborhood.

Not to mention...I personally like the "fun" factor that comes into the mechanical pumps and tuning them. Seems like there are more options, etc. Don't say it too loud or over on TDIclub they will hear you where they swear by electronics, but its just simplier and lends alot more control of tuning, etc. back to the owner vs. having to have custom maps, chips, etc. to work with.
Best of both worlds IMHO, worth the sacrifice of a few extra MPG that we actually probably gain back in our swaps since most of us put them into lighter cars anyways...
