Motor Mount frustration :(

Hey everyone;
Remember how I said my Rabbit was really rattly? Well, my friend (who is also the owner of my local VW Shop ) discovered a broken motor mount so I decided to get it fixed. Upon closer inspection though, we discovered another broken one; the main one at the front/side of the car: directly under the timing belt!! Now apparently, the timing belt must come off for this to be fixed!! Eek! WTF? That seems a complete pain in the butt! The timing belt was also done not that long ago, so this would be totally redundant!
Problem is; the car vibrates so bad that I want to get this fixed .
Should I just bite the bullet and do it or is there some other way!!?!

The timing belt was actually done at a different shop and I am already annoyed with the fact they missed noticing the motor mount (how could you!? :shock: As soon as you get into the car to move it, it vibrates sooo bad!) However, they have some new mechanics and have had some problems in the past year, so I will overlook it this time.. but I don't go there for service any more anyway - just parts.)

My friend (from my local VW Shop) and I also noticed it right away when it was on the hoist (and he susptected it anyway as soon as I told him the car vibrated really badly.) Anyway, that's an aside; I   guess I will save up my $$ and get it fixed as soon as possible.  :oops:

save your $$ and learn to do it yourself, surely there is someone to lend you the tools, or you could buy them all for the service $$, and have them for next time  :wink:

You might want to find a shop to press in the mount, as that is not trivial, nor is this whole task.  It can chew up the good part of a day.  Most of us keep an extra MM bracket or two with new mounts installed on hand, that saves time.  They can be bought at junk yards very cheap.

Be sure to put mount in the correct orientation, I had an 80 yr old friend who has done many, but messed one up recently, and then needed to take apart again and fix (that bites!)

I would do it myself as a learning experience but the weather here is turning to crap and my shop isn't heated (and is also fully occupied by our 1978 Westfalia ) so I'll have to bite the bullet and get it done next week at my local VW Shop, but I'd rather a $300 fix now than a $700 fix later if something decides to rattle loose from all this vibration!  :shock:

I have ordered a Bentley manual and as soon as I get it I am going to study up and learn how to fix more stuff myself!

Too bad it's such short notice, you could have taken a new mount & your car out to the Putnam gtg this weekend & sweet talked someone into helping you install it :wink:

There's a GTG in Putnam this weekend!?!?!  :shock: Why didn't I know this??  :roll: I live like 15 minute drive away
I can still likely get a motor mount in the morning if anyone wants to help me do it . (My VW Shop is open for parts & sales on Saturday mornings.)

Oh well, the weather was too nice today to go and spend it wrenching inside, so I decided to stay home and ride my horse instead .
Where is the Dec. 18 GTG? I may go to that one to do my Odometer fix. (The motor mount will be getting fixed this week at my local VW Shop; it's just too rattly to leave it any longer  :oops:  ).
