I just pulled this shaft out of an engine I picked up.  As you can see on
the closest journal there is some staining and a bit of roughness (enough
to notice so it will have to be removed somehow).  I've never seen
something like this so I don't know whether it is a big deal or not.  The shaft pulled out easily and comes from a fire damaged engine.  What
worries me is that this journal is closest to the oil filter which must have
burned as the oil cooler was full of melted plastic.


Also, it has 16 6 97 stamped in it.  Is this a date?  I'm told the engine
came from a 95 Jetta.

that shaft should be fine. just polish up the journals with some very fine (worn-out, even) emery cloth.
I repair, maintain and modify VW's and BMW's.
Good work done at affordable rates. Welding and fabricating, too.

I agree, I would think polishing it up & using with new bearings (of course), it would run forever again.

I am kinda concerned about the condition of that clutch though... :shock:  :lol:

Cool, I washed it off with brake cleaner and can only see 4 pits in the bearing shaft so it ought to be fine.  The cam lobes in my Suzuki GS1100E engine have a lot more pitting on the trailing surface but are not getting worse despite 10,000 RPM shifting.

yeah, the clutch was a disappointment.  The further I get into this engine the more I realize that it's probably been sitting outside for a very long time.  I guess I'll just have to use my 92 transmission with the 1.9...I'll need an electric shifter just to keep out of the redline though.  :shock:  I'll look into having both surfaces shaved down in a milling machine... but I'm not sure how much material can be removed.

clutch friction surfaces need to be stone ground. don't use a metal cutter of any kind!
