Bad Pump?
« on: February 22, 2007, 04:10:24 am »
Is this actually possible, the pump I had fitted to my 1.6Td had really poor starting but went really well when It got going, having got slowly annoyed with having to start the car with jump leads every morning and parking on a hill whenever I can, I managed to get a Recon pump from a friend who had it fitted to a Passat, same engine no, the problem was the car was really flat and he had the pump and all the injectors tested at the local Vag, they had the pump rebuilt as they said this is why it was so slow, same thing for the injectors, anyway after this it was still no good they told him possibly it was the turbo but he had decided that having spent too much on it already he'd pretty much given up. So I bought the complete engine, fitted the pump on my car and its DEAD FLAT!!!! Or having written all this, will it still be down to the timing as Im waiting to get a Dti at the moment and do it properly.

that sounds like the timing is probably off. how worn is the engine, because it could also be bad compression or something around those lines.

Im hoping that it is just bad timing because I have kept using the old engine and only replaced the pump, the engine flew with the other pump, so i'll have to time it up properly and go from there, I just really wondered if anyone had  a pump rebuilt/checked  and found the same results?

sounds to me like the idle is off and possibly the fuel screw was tweaked with your old pump.  if the pump you have now doesn't have the fuel screw security collar, then break it and try turning it up some... not much though, as you can seriously wreck your car if you're not careful in the way you drive it.

i'd also recommend you advance your timing (1.05mm works nicely... my car starts soo much nicer when cold  despite the engine dying  )

plus... my car doesnt like to idle at 1000 rpm... for some reason it idles super rough and has no guts down low and i nearly stall it at a light...  if your car is idling at 800-900rpm then kick it up to 1000 rpm... not so great for fuel economy but thats ok.

Right I think I'll wait for the Dti to turn up then I'll go from there, Im sure the timing is still out cause it still seems really noisey compared to before, is it possible to have the pump out more than one tooth in any direction? I have already moved it a tooth but like I said still really noisey and no power off boost.
