Quick Question for the turbo gods out there!
« on: February 20, 2007, 10:51:35 pm »
I have an 81 diesel caddy 1.6 na.  I am going to turbo it in the next up comming months.  I have everything i need except a td injection pump.  Can i get away without one and just use the n/a?  what kind of max boost could i, or should i go, or what is that max a n/a pump can handle after tuning the fuel screw??  I do have a egt guage installed so monitoring egt's will be a snap.

If anyone has any thoughts or comments or need to know more info let me know thanks

Ya, you can just run the NA pump but you wont get the performance you would out of a TD pump.

I have a friend that just did the same upgrade you are planning and with just a little bump in timing and a slight fuel screw adjustment that little Rabbit is fast(r).

just watch the EGT gauge and keep it as low as possible as your engine doesn’t have oil squirters.

Someone else will have to post up EGT #'s to watch for.
I'm thinking 1100 deg should be when your backing out of the skinny peddle.

I did a turbo conversion on my 2.4 NA Toyota and ran it @ 1200 deg all the dang time. Still running great. Just be careful and have fun.

thanks for the info.  that helps me alot.  i'm not looking for huge power just more than what i have. the 1.6na is nothing to brag about when its all stock if you know what i mean.  my egt's run pretty low for just normal driving. in town around 35-40 mph i run around 400-500 degrees depending wehter i'm on an incline or not.  highway at 55-65 i run about 750-800 degrees.  if i am balls out pedal to the metal up to 75mph i will peak at 1100 degrees.  from what i have read 1500 is danger zone.

but once i turbo it i do plan on intercooling and installing an air to oil cooler.  i think that will help.  i do have an oil temp gauge and oil pressure installed as well. my oil temp never gets above 180 degree, but take forever to get there.

I'm going to kill my engine. I see 1200 easy try to kere it under 1000 on the highway, plus my oil temps are 230 around town 250 on the highway. The only thing i think could be off is i used a factory sending unit for the oil temp with an isspro gauge. but it seems pretty accurate. I'm going to be adding a vnt with my N/A pump i figure it'll keep me from cranking it up. Cause i have no self control with the "magic screw"

i have yet to plat with that screw, i'm kinda hoping i won't have to very much. but i have a feeling i will have to.  I also hope i might get alittle better economy out of it but i'm not sure what will happen there.  Any recommendations what kind of psi i should run without the td pump?

Do the gov mod and you may be able to get away with not turnin the screw a whole lot. My car runs pretty good with the gov mod and the screw is close to stock. I think you will need to/want to after you get the turbo. The extra hp will help the economy as long as you drive with a light foot.

I don't have a turbo. So i think you'll need more fuel to make boost. I only smoke a dark haze WOT but it stops pulling 3/4 throttle the rest just smokes.

I think I'll be doing the "add a turbo" as well to my 90 NA Jetta, probably not to long after I get it running again.
I'll be sticking with my NA pump for a while, mine has the high alt aneroid on it so mounting a boost aneroid should be easy. I'm considering sending it to Giles for a overhaul anyway
They are fun that's for sure.

the turbo i will be installing is the garrett gt15 from a late 90's tdi.  I do mostly town driving so i feel this will be a good choice from what i've read on other posts.  Just hoping it will be effective enough with the n/a pump.
