injection pump timing without timing tools??????
« on: November 21, 2004, 09:34:36 pm »
Sorry that I on the forum replying lately, I am still trying to get my caddy running and I just got done cleaning the injectors found that 2 were siezed up, and 3 of the 4 glow plugs were slow glows or just old ones that didnt work and I am supposed to have the quick glows, I just checked compression and it seems alright with cylinders #1 @385psi #2 and #3 @360, and #4 trailing at 340psi. my injectors are spraying good using one of the tips here to use a spare injection pump to test them, but now i think that it just became my promary injection pump, before tearing the old one out I am going to need to re time this injection pump, but I dont have any timing tools, i know that most can be fabbed up but I dont have a micrometer or the injection pump adapter for the micrometer

after this essay my point is can I time this engine without the use of a micrometer???
thanks for your help guys this forum is awesome
later
Justin

timing takes a long time

yeah dont settle for just any timing job.  The correct way takes at least 45 minutes (with a really good mechanic)

My mechanic timed mine, and at the very worst I have to glow, crank the engine, stop, glow, crank engine and she catches right away (especially the new battery - 800 cranking amps sears die hard)

Wish you luck on getting your caddy timed properly!

buy the dial guage and the adapter and do it yourself.  They don't cost that much (Jack at vwdieselparts.com has them).  It does take some time, not 45 minutes, more like 20 (at least for me) but it is worth getting it right.  It's not possible to set it by listening to the engine, because it will sound the same (but run faster) if the timing is advanced.

Bit offtopic... yesterday my friend's volvo (the 6cyl version of our 1.6 IDI engines) was timed PROPERLY and wow what a difference.

Must add it turns out the camshaft was off by one tooth as well... but it is unbelievably silent now. No more diesel-truck like noise waking up the whole neighborhood... and the engine actually sits still in its mounts now. It has become SO much quieter, I can't believe it's the same car.

Now I'm considering getting the tools to time my VW. I do have a few dial gauges but they are, as they've always been when I tried to use them, useless without the right adapter :( And the adapter alone is 50 bucks.. oh well, the cost of doing things properly.
