What's the best way to get rid of this black mess?

Also, is it likely that excessive blowby caused this?

either that or the oil control rings in the turbo are shot... how much boost you running???

i'd have to say that orange oil would clean that up pretty quick... and many many towels! if you can take the compressor/turbine housings off then cleaning would be a breeze.

i wouldn't use wd-40. just soak it in some orange oil and use one of those plastic dish scrubber pads. it'll be clean in no time

are the wheels shot? if they aren't then i'd just suspect blowby... if they are shot then probably the rings... bad wheels suuuuckkkk!!!

Stock levels of boost. I don't think the wheels are shot

The best way aint the easiest as you know. I would say take it down a ways. Are you running the vent from the valve cover back to the turbo?

This came off of one of my parts cars. Is it imperative to clean it out?

It is a bit excessive. I think the biggest thing would be if it is gritty or if small pieces fall off and get pushed into the cylinders. The next is to find out were it is coming from either oil supply or blow by. Is it going on your current car? Nice catch ice fishing BTW. Is that a beautiful mermaid you caught?

This turbo actually no longer belongs to me, I sold it to a guy who didn't care about it's condition at all so I never really paid too much attention to it. I also failed to notice that I was sending him a K24 and not a K14 which he wanted :oops: I gave him his money back but then rather then having him send it back to Canada to me and then me selling it again to someone in the States I asked if he would mind shipping it to someone in the states for me. No problem.
The only problem was that because I never really looked at the turbo (I checked the fins and shaft play, both were good) I forgot about all the oil. The new owner is concerned about it (that's his finger in the picture). So right now we are at the "send it back to me and I'll send you a different one" stage or "see how serious this is" and if it warrants sending it back. It's completely his call and if he wants to send it back even if you guys say it's not necessary I'll still take it back.

i would say its from excessive blowby and not be worried about it. how was the shaft play???

do tell him to clean it though... it can't be good for any motor

probably why it came off a 'parts' car heheh

Shaft play was good, as are the blades. He asked me about it, and I didn't know so I made this thread and sent him the link

Sorry, I meant the oil is excessive, although I have seen the compressor side a little oily on the four turbos I have (150K+miles). The Bentley manual stresses the importance of a clean turbo/components. Having it sent to someone else makes things a bit more difficult. With the shaft & fins being in good shape, my vote is that the oil is coming from the vent going into the turbo. Is there any way you can check the inlet side going into the turbo, if you still have it...

After looking again at the photo, I think you would have noticed if the fins were oily, which make the prognosis much worst...

I got some more info on the turbo
" I have the turbo in the house and was just out looking at it. It looks like on the input side that the input case can be seperated by removing about 6-8 10mm bolts around the circumferance. I tried shining a small flash light inside both the input side nwhere you can see the fins9end of shaft) and down the other opening where I first found the oil. I can see very small amounts of oil in between those small fins thru the side. There is also oil on the exhaust fins on the exhaust side. How did you check shaft play. I placed one index finger on the input side of the shaft and the other on the exhaust side of the shaft. no movement L or R, but there is some movement up and down, is that normal?"

isn't the play supposed to be up and down? of course no play would be best...
