I'm so effing pissed right now. My car has been leaving spots on the ground (big ones) as of late. I put it up in the air so I can take a look. Seems like the rear main seal is leaking. I replaced every single seal and gasket on this motor before I installed it in the car, including the rear main seal and it's respective housing gasket. Is there a common mistake that people usually make that causes this to happen after only 15k miles?
check your pump. my car was leaving huge wet spots everywhere... i thought it was oil/coolant at first but then saw the diesel peeing out of my pump.... sad times!
with the pump i got from andy2 i'm all set. no more leaks baby!!! i've never had a diesel leak oil... just burn it
if you are leaking oil, just try a thicker grade to get you by for now. in the summer i added some of that wynns stop leak formula... it stopped oil burning in my car and it ran really good... until the cold winter came and i had to change my oil...
Nah it's definitely leaking oil from the rear seal. It's dripping from the bottom of the bellhousing. If I wipe it off and let the car run, in 30 seconds or so another drop will appear. Besides if it was fuel I'd smell it for sure. I'm already running 15w-40 but I cant run anything thicker. Not if I want the car to start in the morning

. I've gotta fix it eventually, but I want to know why it's leaking when I just replaced it not too long ago.
just seems really strange that your car would be leaking like that... i've heard of people having rear seal leaks... have you searched the forum???
Sometimes, when you're installing the
rear oil seal, the lip of the seal gets
curled or damaged.
The "Goetze" rear oil seals come with
a special thin plastic cover to preclude
this.
No chance it's the front transmission
mainshaft seal or the clutch push rod seal?
Definitely not tranny oil. I noticed that the oil filter/oil cooler housing seems to be leaking too. Now it's getting pretty bad. I'm starting to lose my patience with this car.
I was reading this post:
http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1739&highlight=oil+leakSeems similar to my problem, especially the last post. I wonder if it's all from my oil filter housing, because I took a peek under the car before and the edge of the oil pan that's in the bellhousing is perfectly dry, as is the flywheel. IF the RMS was leakng shouldnt those be oily?
whatever you do... don't lose your patience with your car! hehe no matter what just think of the problems other people encounter with their vehicles and be happy you drive a cheap VW

our dodge caravan is a pos. the tranny coolers that come with it is a POS and my dad always ends up installing a huge tranny cooler. never had a problem since. (it broke twice... the planetary gear was in pieces lol!!!!)
and it has this problem with the key... if you take it out it 'sticks' and drains the battery... i had to boost my mom a couple of times
man one thing that dodge sucks for.. is their rear drums brakes. totally useless!!! never had a problem with vw drums. just oil them up a bit to make sure they dont rust or seize up. every.. couple of years?? if i get one of those... roundtuit's...
also.. just think of all the fun and interesting electrical problems you might have if you didn't drive a nice and simple vw diesel!!!!

just tryin to cheer you up... i've been there before ... not fun
Well, I'm a service advisor at a GM/Subaru dealership, so believe me, I'm aware of the misery that certain can give. It's just that my previous car was a '95 Volvo 850 turbo. That car was wonderful, and hardly anything ever went wrong with it. That, and I've owned several mazda 626's/mx6's over the past 10 years, and they've all been wonderful. This Jetta is starting to remind me of a car I used to own, '82 Peugeot 505 Turbodiesel. That car ran good but was nickle and diming me to death every day. Literally a new thing was breaking on it every week and I couldn't trust the car to go anywhere. I really hope the Jetta isnt going to start being that way, because I really do like it.
Could it be possible that somehow your crankcase ventilation system is plugged or restrictive? Just thinking that if your crankcase was "pressurized" from blowby, etc that it'd force more leaks out than normal...
I had a cabriolet once that had a valve cover problem along these lines. The metal mesh "filter" in the top of the cover right by the vent tube was clogged and it wouldn't vent the crankcase very well. I ended up soaking the whole end of the valve cover in something (kerosene?) to loosen it all up. Just an idea.
