2.0L Diesel question?
« on: January 21, 2007, 01:06:01 am »
i have read the specs but never seen the engine... holy.... do they make alot of power compare to the 1.9L

anyone have more info?? can a 1.9L make that much power reliably?

i have a 94 td - did the plunger mod, AEM intake, running more boost and fuel advanced. i have the intercooler now, but don't know what difference that makes. i live in toronto canada and it is winter now so the intercooler is just sitting around.

Hey nice to see another Toronto guy!

for the 2L TDI, it exist around 2 yr on a Passat (I think is 02, 03, 04) either 2 yr, then it's gone! (AT only too, no MT)

For power wise, seems like not too much increase after the chips.

When I look at all those graphs or data, seems like a chip + 4 good injectors should perform almost as good as a 2L TDI (May be I am wrong)

I didn't see any fuel injectors or bigger turbo for 2L engine at all (May be have some in Euro sites)

if you know anymore stuff, please tell me too.

u seen the actual engine? i think it is a stroke 1.9L. maybe we can find the 2.0l crank and rods, we can stroke our 1.9L to 2.0L.

Hi, I look see that like twice when I go to the dealership, and open a Passat's Engine bay...

Never really open open the engine to check or see what's in it... LOL

I don't know why, I have a funny feeling that it isn't just a stroker kit. Because I never ever see a Euro's crazy mod TDI Golf stroked up to a 2L or do a engine swap for that.....

Because if that's the case, why not a 2.4L Eurovan's diesel engine?? 500cc more to play with...

I think TDI is cast iron, bore 79.5 mm stroke 95.5 mm 1896 cc

And for the TDi one, it is a SOHC engine too... the TDI 2L is a DOHC...

Yea, if those info which I got from 2-3 yr ago is right, then yea... it's DOHC. Even stock, it crank out like 134HP & 250lb?? (For the 2L one)

the reason why they stop making it is because of the exhaust regulation, and finally VW makes enough amount of money on the VE & PD series pump.

Later on... they go back to the old school Common Rail technology to make less exhaust gas! (they develop this technology with other companies together)

If they bring the V6 to here, it will be amazing too, but I don't think so at all...

For that ***in Mercedes, the 320CDI only offer in sedan edition, if they have a wagon one, for sure I got that already! I can just buy that, then use it, instead of like now, try to find the proper mod to make the car run "OK" fast on the road, like normal gasser cars!

(3.2L NO Turbo diesel, 0-100km only around mid 6s) It's nuts!! If this engine have Turbo, properly a 5s or even lower! LOL

I've considering the 2L 16v DOHC PD TDI for conversion into my b3 passat but with the short lived nature of the PD motors, and cost of upgrading them, etc. compared to VE engines or even common rail ones when they come out...think I've tossed it out the window :( Would be cool though!
As for seeing one...like was mentioned, I believe it was a 2yr. deal...if that... I've found a few in the parts networks... (i.e. car-parts.com) for around a 4k figure complete...

Hey joe

Is it OK to share your project with us?? (Let say right now the project is free, but still... less $$ = Better! LOL)

Like... you are tryin to upgrade the whole engine to a 2L?? so... you mean like a engine swap or...

my bad....guess I didn't make it very clear...

First off... when I say "short lived" regarding the PD's, I mean, they weren't produced for all that long... in the US....what? 2004-2006 here....so two years....more over in Europe, but thats a different story...

As for the B3... I'm looking to find a TDI to swap into the b3 wagon I have after liking what I've done with the mTDI in the MK1 rabbit I have. I wouldn't go crazy with it. i.e. lower compression, bigger turbo, etc. I'd want it as economical as possible with few power upgrades to bring it up to around say 110-130hp depending on what I do, etc.
Problem is...its currently not in the finanancial picture at the moment. I have a line on a used TDI longblock that needs to be rebuilt, but don't have the cash to pay for shipping it up here at the moment. Also, the stock motor in my car is the gas version 2l 16v... its got 136k on it at the moment, running strong, about 31mpg, etc. Not bad. Could use a head gasket soon though. I've got a spare one of these gas motors I'm working on a slow rebuild of at the moment as well. Just to have to rebuild (what can I say...i like building them during the winter when riding, etc. is slow...) to swap in the car in the spring if I want...or to sell for profit towards a TDI

The TDI is def. what I'd like to put in the car. It'd be a fairly easy swap, especially with the b3, but its just gotta be in the financial picture. At this point, with the price of the PD motors...the cost of upgrades to them as well as some of the problems that people are having "FROM THE FACTORY" with them, I'll probably stay away from them and go with a VE motor off a 1z/AHU or ALH base... def. will probably go mechanical again as well. Just plain simple...

Don't know what you were talking about with cost? etc.  but don't know if that sheds any light for you either...

let me know...

Oh, the cost, I mean if I get a 2L TDI engine, how much will it be?
(Complete Engine, all it miss is just a computer, then it can run)

Other than that, is it OK to tell me how you build your mTDI at all??

Just mechanical injection without any O2 sensors or...

Yea... taht's why.... Benz 320 CDI wagon is the way to go! Way easier too!

A PD couldn't be run without an ECU, electronics, etc. It has unit injectors, no injection pump, etc. Each injector serves as its own pump...

As far as my mTDI build into the MK1...its detailed in the TDI forums here...

and cost... like I said..i've seen them go for 2k-4/5k depending on whats available...but if you want mechanical, you need a VE motor (pre late 04).

I'll still def. do the swap, its just a matter of finding the motor and the $$$ to do so. Thats the hardest part, IMO. Especially into the b3...everything is fairly bolt in :)

Wasnt Simon (TDIRS) trying to figure out a way to make a 16v TDI work with a VE pump?  I remember he was posting some flow numbers on the 16v head and they were impressive.  I dont know how much farther he got with the experiment as I cant find anything that I'm looking for on TDIClub anymore.

not sure...i thought he was just pumping as much as he could out of the 2l TDI... that was my understanding. Just not quite sure how PD could work with a VE pump without alot of reverse engineering...and do what benefits? In a sense, they are almost totally different beasts.

I've toyed with the idea of not converting the b3...if anyone is over on the vortex...i've been tossing between the ideas of the TDI swap in the b3 or building a 16v T gasser motor with a SDS, megasquirt or similar so that it could run alternative fuels efficiently and reliably....such as ethanol. My big thing is whether the internal combustion motor will hang on even with alternative fuels and whether those alternative fuels themselves will even catch on. The 2L 16v gasser is a nice motor....CIS motronic is "ok", but isn't very tunable and good parts are getting hard to find....new....$$$$$ ...programmable fuel injection...much cheaper, probably more reliable and less likely to break. Still...hard to say, just seems like diesel is the better alternative...

Hmm...could always not run the mTDI in the MK1 and swap that into the b3 and build a crazy 16v for the Mk1 :)

Always so many options...
