I know this isn't anything to do with racing but there sure was alot of smoke.
i was on the onramp and my car took off really hard for having a really shot turbo and before i clued in to what was going on i was up to 150km/h and still climbing. i turned the key off and nothing, took aprox 2.5km before it either ran outta oil or i finally killed it. with rotors glowing red hot and more smoke than a tire fire filling the entire highwayfor what must be the whole time i was on the highway, doesn't a freaking cop come up behind me to see what all the polution was about.. nice time to find out my license was expired!! i got to sit in my car in the window part down and dead battery (damn power windowz) wind chill of around -40 for almost two hours... a night to remember!!

not at all, it was a fight between locking rear brakes and going fast, it would been alot worse if the turbo was working i imagine.
one strang thing i did notice at first, when i floored it the rpm would start to drop??

having one runaway on a work machine, I know what you must have felt I was pretty scared, I had to cover the intake, not my best day
My first was an 85 gas fun
my second is an 86 gas more fun
my third is a 92 n/a diesel project

craiggroombridge nailed it, takes fuel AND air to make it run. Get something stuffed in the air intake if you can............

it's scary and excited.  gets ur adrenaline going. just dunno what to do then when ur motor finally pops it's like aaaaah and then you really dunno what to do haha. i feel yah same thing happened to me.  and unless you've been there, you can't understand how much smoke these things make when they run away. it's incredible, i had the entire highway at a hault both directions hahaha.  i cant imagine what people were thinking when they saw it

My first Rabbit (free) messed up the oil pump/ vacuum pump connection over 1000 miles from home. I messed with things, ended up buying a new oil pump. After that I took off from Albaquerky, NM happy it was working... until I hit 60mph. Then it took off, same thing shut off the key and complete surprise when it's till running and getting faster. I slammed on the brakes with it in gear and everytime I tried to start it, it would take off as soon as it started. The cops saw the smoke signal and were there right away. I told them I didn't want it towed just yet and would like a chance to mess with it a bit. I finally got it going but every time it hit 60mph it ook off again.
 I drove 55 all the way home with a huge parade following me, then when I'd try to go a little faster so as not to slow them all down, it would take off and cover them all in a huge smoke cloud, I'd pull over and brake HARD. One truck must have thought it blew up because he went to pull over and help/laugh at me. I just waived him on and started the whole process over again. I must have smoked 'em up 4 or 5 times before i made it home. I can't drive 55. :D
 The last journey of my first/free 1.5 diesel bunny, with that engine anyway. Knowing what I know now, I'm lucky I made it to AZ and home at all. Get a free Rabbit that has sat with a window open and fuel cap off for 2 years, get it running, didn't even change the timing belt before I took off.
 Glad I wasn't stuck sitting by the road for hours in the freezing cold. But I was warned that on that stretch of road, if I left my car for any length of time it would be stripped by the time I got back.

Man...That would be scary as HELL! Too bad it happened. My heart would have been beating like the motor screaming. Glad to hear that you got it under control.
Is runaway caused by bad rings or the screen mesh in the valve cover? I’d like to prevent it so it don’t happen to me (with my luck it would be minus 40*F and both windows would be broke!)
When my lady really wants to get me in the mood, she rubs a little diesel behind her ears.

it's usually caused by bad rings, the mesh really doesn't do anything but help,  on my rabbit i rebuilt it and i still had the problem of run aways, i think it was something with the oil supply to the cam shaft or something, i stuck a cam splash guard on it and that was the end of it, so it can be a few things.  another than that can cause a run away, is a bad turbo seal on the intake side, like in the original posters case.  it's very scary, and definetly something to be concerned with, but if it does happen, don't panic, and w/e you do, don't put your car in neutral, and if you do you need to get out and cut off the air supply some how.  another way to help prevent a run away is to remove the ccv from the intake, on my rabbit i put a breather on it, and i plan to do the same on my turbo diesel jetta, it dumps a bunch of nasty stuff in the turbo anyway.

also it helps to hone your cylinders when you rebuild the motor :P CO2 fire extingiushers work awsome. when you shoot it down the intake it displaces the oxygen and doesn't leave a mess. would be good to have for other things (such as interiors) since it doesn't leave residue.

in tech school an old detroit 2 stroke ran away
the teacher took a hammer+smashed the supply line fitting going into the cyl head right off the head
good thing the pistons/cyls airbox/etc were tight enough that it didnt run away on its oil
it had a governor problem
nothin sounds like a 2 stroke detroit revving north of 4000(normally 2200 or so MAX)

nah that wasn't the problem homey, like i said we'll sit our rabbits nex to each other, mines tight and it hardly has any blow by and uses nooil, it's all legit
