My friend has an 83 rabbit with an unknown TB history so I was going to replace it for him.

I was planning on replacing all that touches the TB, is there anyone that sells everything in a kit? If not what are all the bits I need?

It has very low miles less that 40,000, the cam seal is easy enough to replace so I probably will, what about the crank seal? only if its leaking?

I wouldn't even touch the cam seal if it isn't leaking. All you really need is the tensioner and the TB.

So the water pumps are rarely an issue? Guess I'm used to the TDI TB where the WP is always replaced due to the 100k belt. any place in particular that has good prices? Brands to avoid?

i thought replacing the WP at 100'000km was a regular maintenance item... how much are they again? and isn't it necessary to pretty much get at the WP to change the timing belt anyways??? perfect time to change the WP, and at around $100 as per ETKA... i think it's a great idea!

WPs are super easy to change on a mk1. I did probably 3 of them (in one day, don't use used pumps)
Remove the alternator, remove the alternator bracket (PITA with some styles, usually the mk1 style is better then the mk2 though) and then take out the 1 other bolt and remove the WP with it's housing. It's maybe 1 hour of work if you don't have the crappy alternator bracket and the bolts aren't rusted off. There is no need to touch the TB
They are also $50 at C-tire
