Power Figures?

Ok guys. I can't seem to find anything through Googling.
What are the power figures on the IDI and TIDI engines? What can they handle with minimal money put in? How high can you get them without blowing things to smithereens?

Why I ask is not only because I need to see if any would bolt to the Terc tranny without instant grenading, but I'm thinking about bolting a Terc body onto a Toy Pickup 4wd frame and using its drivetrain (not sure if I'll do it yet though) which will handle a good deal more grunt than the Terc's.

Heh. So its obvious the 1.6L TD has a lot more potential than stock if it can jump so much just with the security of an intercooler allowing different tuning.
98ft/lb and 68HP it looks like. Thats compared with the 3AC 1.5L I-4 gasser I haves figured of 62HP and 75ft/lb. That would be a heck of an increase.

Nowhere is the redline for any of the VW diesels listed that I can find. I may just be an idiot though. Heh.

Any more info?

The stock tach on a 1.6TD has a dotted redline at 4750 and solid redline at 5000.  With stock fueling/govenor you have to try pretty hard to get it to rev to 4500.  TDI doesn't like to rev as much as the 1.6

Don't forget that the TD's torque peaks very low relative to the 3AC so there will be more area under the curve (torque curve) at the low end.  End result is the TD will feel stronger than the numbers indicate at low/medium rpm.

2800RPM torque peak isn't too bad for a gasser! Lol.

Too true. The Passat (our 1Z TDI) doesn't rev terribly high. But its gearing sure makes up for it. It does do well for its power. (EDIT: Offensive content. Sorry)
How reliable is the engine running around the redline? I run close to 5 grand in my Terc all the time.  In fact, I run close to my 6k redline all the time, but I could adjust. I'm wondering because the stock diffs are 3.727:1 in my Terc. Later years were 4.10:1. I don't think I could even find any different ratios for my car in stock trim. Maybe if I went full RWD I could though. Throw an AE86 rear end in...

Even with the modded pump, I'm not sure I really like to keep my engine above about 3600 rpm for extended lengths of time.  By 4000, it really seems like it's wound up pretty tight.  For short blasts, I can zip it up to 4300-4500 without issue, but I'd hate to cruise with it like that longterm.  Probably wouldn't blow up immediately, but I know it's not very fuel efficient up there and is probably harder on it.

My 1.6TD seems happiest cruising about 2800-3100 rpm.

I think that puts me up maybe 65mph? 86mph is about 4100RPM in 5th.
My gears are as follows- (Car and Driver report 1983)
3.73 Differential Ratio

EL-  4.71 -  3.7mph/1000RPM
1-   3.67 -  4.7mph/1000RPM
2-   2.07 -  8.4mph/1000RPM
3-   1.38 -  12.6mph/1000RPM
4-   1.00 -  17.4mph/1000RPM
5-   0.83 -  21.0mph/1000RPM

Based on stock-size 175/70R13 tires. I have hit 5000RPM in 5th. Actually a little over. I think 5300RPM. Downhill of course. Lol.

2800-3100 in 5th= around 58.8-65.1mph. Thats so slow... >.<

At the 4500Red, we're talking 94.5mph. Heh.

My typical highway cruise is around 80-90mph. Guess I'll have to go look at tire size possibilities to get that gearing down, eh?

Sorry, but your mom's 90hp TDI is not going to go 130mph no matter how it's geared.  And 80-90mph cruise on the highway in an '84 Tercel is liable to get you killed.  IMHO.  Your gearing sounds fine for reasonable cruising speeds and the occasional burst higher than that.  My TD will be turning 4000rpm at 70mph!  Of course it's in a much heavier vehicle.

Actually I didn't want to know any of that stuff.

Hope you had VR rated tires on that Passat.  As for the speeds you're reaching on declines - whoopee.  You don't even need an engine to break the speed limit on a 5% grade.  If you're looking for a speed thrill why don't you go to Six flags and ride the rides instead of endangering yourself and others on public highways.  Thanks.

I am just curious which mtn roads in the Northern Colarado region have enough straight 5% grades to get a Passat up to that, much less a Terc. The only ones i can think of have a lot more traffic than 3 cars/hour. On top of that, i have yet to see a road that meets your criteria that isn't a "public highway".

Oh and hey, your mother called and said you should come home before the street lights come on.

the diesel forum does not need any lame mom jokes bud... and i'm sure i'm not the only one who thinks that.

NOW back to topic... i recommend going with a toy pickup chassis and transmission.  if you can find a way to bolt up a 1.6TD then you'd be laughing.  with an intercooler & larger exhaust and a big rad (trucks just run hotter) you should easily be able to bring the HP up to 120 maybe 150.  The torque would be much greater than the 2.4D toy diesel engines, and those were really really powerful torque monsters... definitely not speed demons though.  the only thing i would advise, is gearing down while going uphill in the truck... just so you dont load down the engine too badly.
