I found these kits for rebuilding VW Diesels.

Has anyone used one of these? What was the quality like? Also is there any difference between a 85-87 TD and a new IDI 1.6TD? I am not sure what year the one I have is so will this kit work do you think?

Your 1.6 has the Hydraulic cyl head (86-92) thats engine code MF.The engine code is on the front side of the block at the top below the headgasket.No clue about the quality or price of the kit,hopefully someone else will have some input! You will be getting OS pistons for you engine as opposed to re ringing right?

also be sure to ask them if the pistons that you will be getting are kollbenschmidt... if not then don't get it. a new oil pump would be nice too

Why kollbenschmidt? They want $350 US or a set of those. That seams way to high for 4 pistons. I did a full rebuild on a Toyota 22RE for $350 for the full kit. All good stuff too, bearings and timing chain.
I have not decided about re-ring or full bore job. The cylinders are in very good shape put have a bit on a ridge at the top. If I go with this kit I will bore out and oversize because I can afford it. I hope someone can comment on the quality. I don't understand why parts for these engines are so hard to get. They have been making them for 20 years?

? This was the only full kit I could find on the net.

I need to get a new head, so that will cost me some cash.

If you check around you will find a supplier for parts. I did a recent job on my 1.6 TD getting all the parts from Competition Motors in Belleville for fair prices. These are OEM manufacturers not Chinese knock off crap.

I think that putting $350 US just for pistons on an old 1.6 is too much.The kit on the site including all gaskets etc is all the $$$ Id ever want to spend.I doubt you'll find a full kit for less $$$ and for that reason alone you would probably be better off getting that kit with whatever pistons than spending the same money on re-ringing the engine with "name brand" parts.I'm sure the parts will hold up fine!Just my 2 cents.

That is my thinking as well andy. I am not going to regrind the crank and stuff as the rod bearings were in great shape. I was just going to reuse the old pistons but one of them is in bad shape. I may just do the re-ring thing and change the rod bearings. The problem with the pistons is that they are chunking out where the prechanber comes in and am afraid that pieces will get down the side. That is what looks like happend to the one piston.

the outer edges of my pistons were burnt... and somewhat 'melting'... probably from driving it too hard, and having crappy pistons... kollbenschmidt has a heat reflective coating on the crown... good quality!

if the pistons last you 300'000km with hard driving, then it's totally worth it

Well I am pretty sure that these pistons were VW standard. I have no idea how many Km were on it though. I will have to think about this a bit. I need to get a good head first maybe.

I was looking at this rebuild kit before too, I am also worried that the pistons may not be up to par, did you contact the company and ask who the manufactuer is for the parts in the kit....

So you guys have got me looking into kits now and I cant find a listing for a 90 1.6. Think the 87 stuff is the same?

I called the company listed in the link above with the intention of asking about hte pistons and was on hold so long I forgot what the heck I called them for so I asked about a kit for my 90.. nothing.

Bottom line on stuff like this, if it seems too good to be true.. it usually is..
Use parts of questionable quality, end of witha rebuild of that same quality. I'd definitely be looking for a list of brands if I were purchasing such a kit. I'd want to see names like goetz, kolbenschmidt, mahle, glyco, meistersatz, etc.
