B3 Audi or Passat Intercoolers?

I'm trying to find out about B3 Audi 80's and Passat 1.6 td intercooler setups.

It seems some of them came with intercoolers fitted to the 1.6td engine, does anyone know if they can be easily fitted to the golf 1.6 td? were they a similar set up to the golf GTD, or different.

Does anyone have any pics of these setups?

Interesting question... What year B3's / Passats are you talking about?  What engine codes?  I might be able to check a few things...

Audi 80's the first round shape, 86 to 91 I'd imagine. Passat similar era up to 91 again I'd think.

Not exactly sure of the exact details, but trying to find out more.

Ok... Did some digging in the European family album...

Here's the setup from a 1991 Audi 90 with the SB engine.  Looks to be a side mount style intercooler, but I've never seen one in person and we didn't get them here in the US.



Looks like they were the same from 1988 up until 1993 on the Audi 90 model then they looked like this:



Now... For the Passat, they appear to be different.  Here's the IC setup on a 1991 Passat with the SB/RA(?) motor:



Not sure what to make of the piping on that one.  Is it front mount?  Can't really tell.  Seems like the Passat's kept this same style IC past 93 (minor changes).  

The real thing to do would be to find pics of the actual cars, of course, but maybe that helps somewhat.    Not sure how either one would do on a Mk2, but any IC seems to help.  It's just a matter of space and packaging...

hi..

on the audi 80 B3 (RA/SB) and the B4 TDI (1Z/AHU) the intercooler is mounted
on the right side, behind the bumper, so its a SMIC.
the passat 32b (built until 1988) should be quite the same.

the newer passat 35i (RA/SB) has an SMIC located on the left side.

always think of the mounting direction of the engine: audi 80/passat 32b: longitudinal, passat 35i: transverse.

for the AAZ-engine in an Audi 80 B4 or the Passat 35i it is easiest to get all IC parts from the corresponding TDI-version.

on the golf/rabbit only the original IC is PnP.

bri957cc I was talking to a chap that had the B3 Passat (up to 1992 as I used to have a K reg one) and apparently the IC was mounted in the wheel arch somewhere.  He's going to send me photos so when he does, I'll post 'em up.
As to the SB engined GTD setup, I've posted a pic of my engine bay up somewhere, but just in case here's the thread with a copule of GTDs in it.

Between this place and Edition 38 I have all the info I needed. Hope to get an intercooler sorted out in the next couple of months....MOT first  :roll:

Aye, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you Bri.  What condition are the brake lines in?  I just had to change most of mine  :roll:  but a light buffing with some Waxoyl could save you a fortune...
