Engine compatability
« on: January 06, 2007, 08:35:33 am »
Hi folks,

As the topic sugests i have 2 VW engines and was wondering if i can make a good one out of them.

Right i have a AHU 1.9 TDI with Kerma race nozzles in and a blown headgasket   :( . Secondly i have an AAZ with the loose crank bolt problem  :( .

Was wondering if i can use the AHU botttom end with the AAZ top to make one good engine  :D . From what i have read on the forum, some later AAZ engines came with the TDI in them. My main concern is the location of the oil, waterways and piston crown in relation to the 2 differant engines.

If this is compatable then i will be building a "new" engine for my MK2 GTD. Nothing wrong with the old one, its coming out for an engine bay spruce up and i thought while its out might stick a rebuilt upgraded unit in  :)

if your tdi has a blown head gasket, why don't you just fix the head gasket?  or is it a more severe problem in the actual head?

i agree with libbybapa... but since you were going to butcher two engines to make one, simply get the crank on the aaz fixed and sell it for $2000 depending on its condition, and use the money for a brand new TDI head & head gasket & head studs.  with that kind of setup you should have no problems for a long long time!

Thanks for the info folks,

The AAZ engine, i managed to find a complete unit with "worn rings" so the owner told me, had a drive of the car and yes it was chuffing blue smoke out of the exhaust. Made him an offer which he didnt like £25, thats about $50, he said call it £35 and i could have it, mind you he then said for another£15 i could have the whole car !!!!. Its a Seat Toledo turbo diesel with 148,000 on the clock, spent last night stripping the engine out. There is negligable wear on ther bores, crank is ok, nothing honning the bores wouldnt get out, a new set of rings and shells an oil pump and a head job. Ordered all the bits through my work and were delivered today. So for an outlay of £175 i hopefuly will have a rebuillt AAZ motor to go in the mk2 GTD.

The AHU unit, the head is off and at this time is being pressure tested, if its ok it will go back on with a full de-coke and rebuild. Its not in my car, i have a AFN 110 TDI in my passat, the AHU is for a friend, she was quoted a astronomical ammount to replace the head gasket, and seen asthough i was going to rebuild my golf she provisionally gave it to me.

I felt a bit guilty so had a check over. I have the full use of a diesel workshop where i work and did my good deed for the week in my own time, so its costing her the price of a gasket set, the pressure test and a chinese take away for me to do the job.  :D
