hmmm that arrow seems to be pointing to some sort of manufacturing date... not sure though.
about the cheap oil... the only real time that your engine will burn oil is under a large load (hard accelerating). if the engine will only see 3000-3500pm gradual acceleration, the soot levels and oil burning should be kept to a minimum.
if you really want this motor to last forever, i would suggest checking out the fs-2500 bypass filter. it will save you lots of time changing the oil especially since you can't just go under the boat
www.fs2500.coma quick run-down of how the bypass filter works, is that it is a low flow filter that pretty much cleans all the black soot out of the oil (basically taps into the high pressure oil gallery like a pressure gauge would). All you need to do is change the filter at around 10'000km or i believe 850 hours, and top off any fluid.
i'm currently biding my time waiting to get one off ebay. I will run a good synthetic year round (the filter media is approx $23). I'm not affiliated with them whatsoever, but I am just throwing this out there since it's a really good product, and gets rid of that nasty soot in the oil.
you said you were going to give the motor new rings correct? I think you may also want to check out
www.totalseal.com for their total seal rings. most people who buy them love them, and report no more blowby
