What's your valve spring compressor?
« on: December 30, 2006, 09:13:58 pm »
My Bentley shows a strange setup with a bar that attaches to the head and a lever with a cylinder for pressing the valves down. The rental tools at the local shop are all made for cars with springs that are exposed. I've heard of people fabricating their own.

What kind of valve spring compressor do you use on your VW? Can you post a picture? Can someone offer help on fabricating my own?

regular valve spring compressor and socket a little bit smaller then the valve spring and cut holes in the side of the socket so you can reach in with needle nose pliers and take the retainers out.

First of all this is for the head out of the car, if it's in the car, you have to make sure that the valves don't fall, or else you will be removing the head from the car.

For my gasser, we took an old nut from the half shafts to the wheel and put some felt around the sides so that it didn't mar the sides.  Then we welded two sticks of metal straight up and one across to make something we could puch against.  Then we took some square pipe and welded two little parts of square stock to it to make a groove where we could set the nut thing.

We used some flat stock with some holes drilled to act as a fulcrum for the handle.  So we put the handle in between the flat stock and the head, and then we put in the nut device and pulled down on the handle, which after some pushing the valve would hit the table the head was on and it would come up.  And we used a telescoping magnet to grab the little valve holder things.

I wonder if that makes any sense at all.  I really should have taken pictures so that I could show you exactly what I mean, cause it's a lot simpiler then it sounds.

something like this maybe:
Code: [Select]

   __  <flat stock
-----------------------------   <handle (Actually gets bent up.)
         =-=    <top
          |
          |      <this is the nut thing
          |
        |===|   <nut

______--------_____ <head

So the nut goes on the spring and it has felt around the edges so we didn't damage the block.  Then you press on the handle while the block is steadyed.  That was my solution, pretty simple, but hard to explain.
