I just got an 89 VW jetta 4cyl diesel for my city driving as it gets 46MPG. VS my big truck getting 8-10. What wieght oil should I use, how often should it be changed. 3k like normal gas motors. Also its a 5spd and would not shift into R or 5th. So i replaced the linkages and bushings, now it goes into R but not into 5th.. Got any tips.... Also I want to koe if i got ripped off on this car. It has a manual sunroof, EVERYTHING works. no power options. CD player. nice paint, interior needs cleaned. What would a good price be for that car, 219k on the odometer

depends on your location really, and the maintenance that the previous owners did to the car.

i would guess around 1000$ cdn for the car.  i've heard '89 was a bad year for vw's rusting etc...  having reverse and 5th not working would definitely decrease the price though... how would you really know for sure if it was the tranny or the linkages, or even a transmission mount???

if everything else checks out, maybe the transaxle fluid is a bit low?

3k oil changes is reasonable.  some people with synthetics extend it to around 6k or even 10k.  15w40 in the summer and 5w40 in the USA or 0w40 in Canada for the winte time.

219'000km is not bad for a diesel... has the motor ever been touched/worked on??? and how much did you actually pay for the car???

Well i live in Tennessee. And The previous owner didnt do maintance aswell as I would. I was going to use the Rotella 15w40, i can get 5quarts for 8dollars. and I usually use a Protec oil filter, But i wanted to look into a Bypass system, and possibly running full synthetic, but money doesnt permit that right now. i paid 500 for the car and everything works except not shifting into R and 5th. but i bought a new linkage an bushing kit, so i put all that on and im thinking maybe i didnt put it back together right cause it shifted into 5th an R when i first looked at the car. has a new axle and right bearing but needs the front left bearing, only like 20 dollars and 20minutes to fix.

yea you can use whatever muffler you want :)  as your car never came with a CAT.  If your car was a turbo you could go without a muffler, and it would still be pretty quiet :)

500 isn't so bad.  for the bypass system check out www.fs2500.com :) their video's are incredible.  rotella is great stuff, it doesnt burn like normal oil does.

bearings are usually a normal wear item on these cars.  luckily mine seem to be okay though :)

I had my car rust-checked last year, and before i brought it in there, the shifter was really gummed up bad... when i got the car back it was loose as a goose and i'm really loving it... all it needed was some lube :)

how much is one of those bypass systems cost? will one of those mufflers sound good and will it be hard to make this jetta pass emmissions?

the muffler is there merely to create some back pressure and reduce the resonance of the engine.  i doubt it will do much to the emissions.  for the sound... not quite sure if you will like it as the motor should be louder than the exhaust :)  when i put one of those cone filters on my car, the motor sounds much louder  :wink:

the bypass system is around $450 but pays for itself after after a few years.  I'm going to buy the $200 filter housing off ebay and get my own hoses :)

thats prolly the only thing i dont like about having a diesel. the motor is louder then EVERYTHING. I was hoping by adding a muffler it might give it that little Ricer burner type sound wich isnt the best but better then what it is now. Amsoil also has a Bypass kit that is only 63 dollars. The BMK-11

well just look at the video from the fs-2500 site.  they show a comparison of amsoil vs their bypass filter... you will be amazed :)

i love the loudness of the motor... you can't really sneak up on people but oh well.

i cant really afford to spend that much on that stuff right now. so whats the BEST way to protect my motor untill i can save up money. Rotella 15w40 and a specific oil filteR?

Rotella and just about any good filter, NAPA gold, Wix, Baldwin to name a few. I would personally stay away from Fram filters and the cheapy store brands, a few bucks more for a good filter is worth it IMHO.
