Idle messed up
« on: December 29, 2006, 01:07:20 pm »
Hi,

my friend just bought an MK1 golf with mk2 1.6NA engine. It doesnt want to idle properly, it idles high and the rpms dont drop quickly after releasing the accelerator on the pump, ran diesel purge in it after replacing the fuel filter. checked the timing belt all in perfect spec.

It will increase its rpms on a constant throttle angle, like a gas engine, and goes gutless if floored.  I have removed the injectors to check their spray patterns -  injector break pressure at 115 to 120 bar on stock SD240 nozzles.

its hard to start even with the engine hot, seems as if the pump is too much advanced, it smokes a lot while cranking and the engine rattles more than my car at idle,

anyone know how to determine a good reference point for the 2 adjustment screws on the back of the pump, They seem to be functioning as the advancing system.

Could be lots of things.  Check this out.

Look at instruction number 4.  It shows where your residual fuel adjust is.  Also back off your max fuel screw and see if that helps.  If it just started happening you may have a bad cylinder with low compression.

checked the compression, 360-380 psi.

I tried to adjust what I came to know as the idle governor lever adjustments, it got it idling low but I still have the delay in deceleration.

btw what is a good starting point in adjusting the idle governor lever

adjusted the idle governor setting, idles are ok now.

but it behaves like it has a dashpot on it, (it does not have one) it revs sharp but does not drop quickly, on the highway the speed does not drop sharply upon lifting off, any suggestions,

still hard to start when warmed up, even harder when cold
