'85 four door Jetta TD with 261000 km on the clock. Five speed car, was running when parked several years ago. Wheels and fuel tank already removed, was about to go on top of a load headed to the crusher. Pretty much a complete car, but the body is on the tough side. I'm going to see if I can get it to run...
Don't know what I'm going to do with it, but I couldn't see that many potentially good parts getting crushed!

Could be a good doner car..........

Got it home, engine is NOT seized (good start!) Looks like a K24 turbo, Turbo diesel emblem on a good grill..... Non air, non power steering car. A LOT easier to work on! Battery cables were cut with bolt cutters... Windshield is cracked because they were picking it up with a crane/chain through the front door windows.......

Don't have time to mess with it for a few days, but when I do I'll hang a small fuel tank off the hood and see if I can get it running. Don't know if I'll start looking for something to put it in, just put the parts on the shelf, or sell it. Have to see.......

i still have a 1990 jetta that i pulled all the TD stuff out of and started parting. you're welcome to whatever you need to get that car back to life. good luck. -BTTD

if they lifted it from its roof the frame probably has some damage... i'd say find another diesel body for cheap and swap the motor etc inside. (that way you wont need to find a new windshield, fuel tank, etc)

the car probably still has some decent parts on it that you could swap though

my shell had front end damage and has since had the lower windshield metal cut out.

I'm toying with finding a mk 1 car to put this stuff in, two door jetta maybe (had a gas one I liked) or maybe even an early 'rocco. Power to wieght is where it's at! I'd really like to do a truck but I need a back seat. Not in a big hurry to do anything with it. Might even just keep it for parts for the two '92 jettas we have for daily drivers. Not doing anything with it until I figure out what kind of shape the motor is in!

Body is way beyond saving.

haha i have one of those already, i was just hoping to get a factory td one.

and definetly go with the td in an a1 chassis car, i have mk1 2 door jetta like you mentioned with a turbo diesel, such a unique car, and everyone that rides in has their eyes light up when the boost gauge hits 25 and the thing really starts pulling :twisted:

I have the badge you are looking for. You can have it if you get the pump. It's not in the best shape though, but I think it will still hang onto the grill just fine. Joyeux Noel. It's not for sale though, I'm putting it on my car if you don't take it.

Got a set of cables on it yesterday and put a battery in it. Cranks over, but not near fast enough. going to get a spare starter rebuilt today, wanted one onthe shelf anyway.........

Didn't sound like it had enough compression, a little too smooth turning over. Will hydraulic lifters in these things collapse from sitting around like an old chevy? will they pump up on there own?

I once bought a car similar to what you described. It had been sitting for about a year. It was a 92 so it had hydrolic lifters. I cranked it over until it finally got enough fuel and then it started so I guess the lifters pump up themselves

Buddies Beamer with Hydro-lifters sat in his grandpas garage for a year. We went over to fire it up, and had to crank on it for quite some time before it started. And it didn't run too hot at first either. So I'm guessing that they will oil up, but depending on the engine and the oil circuit, it might take some time. You could hear that the valve timing was off for the first minute or 2 of it running but it settled in. I then Sea-Foamed the thing, crank and tank, and it ran strong.. Until he head-on'd with a Durango doing 65mph. No more Beamer...

THey pump themselves. In my Gas jetta after taking out all the valves because of a head gasket failure and draining them all, it took about 30 seconds of really bad valve click before they finally stopped.

The same with the Golf Diesel I bought that had been sitting for over 5 years. When I tried to start it seemed to crank normal but just was not starting, after getting all the air out of the lines it finally started and it ran a bit rough for the first few minutes but then it eased out and was good. Probably more of a cold thing then a valve thing on the Golf.
