1985 Jetta 1.6lTD clutch pedal to the floor?
« on: December 23, 2006, 02:22:08 pm »
Okay, so i am a not so well versed on working on cars...

I was driving around the block this morning, and i heard an almost ripping sound when i pushed the clutch pedal. I had half clutch for one more shift, and now i have nothing. I was able to limp home in second gear.

I looked behind the pedals, and it appears that the clutch pedal isnt attached to anything. So i can only assume that the clutch cable broke?

I do have some basic mechanics tools, and a knack for picking up things. Is this something i can do myself? Any insight into making the job easier?

Thanks in advance!

I did some searching around, but i couldn't find anything on this topic.

hey there,
yep, sounds likely its the clutch cable. very simple job to install a new one, a bit trickier to adjust it. if you look at the top of the clutch pedal you will see where it hooks on. the other end goes through the clutch arm on the transmission and is held with a clip. take a look at what is there as you remove the old and you should be able to install the new with the reverse process. have fun, happy holidays. -bttd

Hopefully a snapped cable is all that happened. It is the most likely problem though. Further investigation will defintly show you.
Hopefully none of your metal pieces that hold the cable to the arm fell off and got lost. All vws 1974-1992 for sure have the same pieces, gas and diesel alike.

A friend of mine and I did one on a petrol Golf a couple of weeks back, and it took all of half an hour.  It's good to have assistance for the adjustment, but apart from that, it's not too tricky.
Good luck!

Is there any way someone can do me a humongous favor?

I am still waiting on the part... (Damn blizzardx2)

I am pretty sure i can reverse engineer putting this bad boy in, but was wondering if someone with a Bentley(mine is on order) could scan the pages for this procedure and email them to me? Please!

Send me a private message if this is somethign that you would be willing to do for me!

Much thanks in advance,
