Where do you "T" in the Boost Gauge Line?

Looking around the engine bay of my Quantum, I see a number of places to "T" in the boost gauge line. On my old Talon I put the T right by the intake manifold (and the bleed by the ECU's boost sensor), but these don't look like the right place on a turbo diesel. Is the best place by the boost enrichment diaphram?

An easy place to install a boost gauge sense line is tee'd into the small line that feeds the boost enrichment device.

When I removed the intake elbow to turn it around for installing the intercooler charge pipe, I tapped a new fitting and ran my boost guage and manual boost controller from there.

Okay, my boost gauge arrived yesterday so this afternoon I teed it into the boost line between the intake manifold and the pump and went for a spin. In 2nd and 3rd gears it would run right up to 9 psi boost as the RPMs maxed (the tach doesn't work), then drop down to about 8.5. I don't think it's really losing boost. What I really think is happening is that the fuel cutoff is pulling the power back a bit, judging from the feel of the car. The motor just falls flat, right as the boost is coming on strong and the motor is pulling really well. I can't wait to have Giles perform his magic and then get it into the CSR...

Got any suggestions for upping the boost limit? There appears to be a hard steel line between the compressor outlet and the wastegate that would be tough to tee the boost controller into. Any ideas about how to defeat the boost limit?

looks like youve got the k24 ,thats what I'm running also. before I started playing with the fuel I ran that turbo non-wastegated and went from 9.5 psi to about 13 psi . the spool up time was alot faster and there was alot less smoke.When I uped the fuel I then had to hook up the wastegate and use a boost controller. Anyways all I did was remove the bajo bolt in the steel line at the turbos compressor housing and put a regular bolt in to stop air from getting through that line. This simple mod can make a world of difference to an otherwise stock engine.

That's about the pressure to expect... 9 - 9.5 psi seems right on for a stock 1.6lTD.

Stan, the KKK has an easy boost adjustment menthod, I haven't tried it yet (only played with the Garrett turbos so far myself) but from what I understand it's just loosen a jam-nut and adjuist a threaded rod, then re-tighten the jam nut.  It changes the pre-load on the wastegate spring.

If/when you go adjustable boost control by changing the air getting to the wastegate, keep in mind there is quite a large air bleed-off inside the wastegate, so there will be some flow through your wastegate adjuster.  All you need to do to change the boost pressure then, is vary the restriction in your boost pressure adjuster.

Here is a HP/torque curve (G-tech) of my motor before making any adjustments to the stock revv-limiter.  Falls flat pretty quickly, huh?

Yes, Andy, I have a K24 turbo. I know which banjo fitting you refer to and can do this mod in about 5 minutes. I'll try it tonight and get back to you guys. And I'll do a new g-tech run as well to see if it improves on my 74 hp reading.

Jake, my Bentley calls for 9-10 psi at full throttle in 3rd gear (I have the 1985 Quantum-specific Bentley). It says that if the stable reading is below 9 psi to disconnect the blow-off valve (?) and try again. I did that but there was no improvement. Of course, it also says that if your turbo makes more than 10 psi it is broken and needs replacing... :roll:

I do seem to recall that there is a threaded rod with a nut on it sticking out the end of the wastegate. I'll check to see if changing the nut position (preload on the spring) adjusts the boost level. I'll probably try this before simply disconnecting the line.

BTW, Andy, what did you use to replace the hard line with so that you can use a manual boost controller?

One important thing I forgot to mention about that mod includes plugging the blow-off in the intake ,mine opened at 12-13 psi and we dont want that , It vents back to the turbos intake hose ,so you pull out the straight plastic connector and replace it with somthing 1" in diameter,I used  a peice of broom stick and a heavy hose clamp (you dont want that plug to come loose) then just slide it back in the hose ,done.
For hooking up the boost controller , I removed the line, choped it in half then put a decient flare on both ends. to hold the hose on safely.

I played around with adjusting the wastegate but  that only gives higher boost,by disconneting the wastegate you get higher boost as well as receving it alot quicker,to get more boost I cranked up the fuel then after that the boost controller is the way to go.  I ran 16 psi before I installed my manual boost controller.

I used a line 1" plug to plug the blow-off hose, with a hose clamp around the outside. No worries there. As for the hard line, I have a flaring tools, so am sure I can work something out.

I really wish I could figure out what is wrong with my tach. The wire is on the w-terminal of the alternator, but the tach doesn't work. Tonight I'll look at the fuses to see if any are burned out...a wag, I know, but just trying to eliminate all the possible sources of trouble. The red line is at 5000 RPM! :shock:

My new dry sump pump has a mechancial tach drive on it, so when I put the engine in the CSR it should be easy to get a reliable rev count.

I performed Andy's boost modification (plugged the wastegate line) and got an immediate jump to 12.5 psi. Very nice!

Funny thing, though, is that my butt dyno's perception that the motor had a little more umph (placebo effect?) was not reflected in the g-tech results. In fact, they went down sharply. I made two runs and got 44 hp and 45 hp, respectively. That's down from 74 hp before. Installation error?

My EGT is here, too, and I will be installing it soon. Then its time to add some fuel... :twisted:

Ok here is my question. Where would I put my boost gage on my K14 KKK turbo. At least that is what the tag on the turbo reads.  I noticed a little nipple on the intake that is plugged off. It is right where the intake line from the turbo connects to the  main intake. Is that a good place to take the boost from?  I'm new at turbos, any good sites or book references would be great, Pictures, I like pictures.  Hey what can I say, I grew up on pictures all through out my Air Force career. They have them in every Technical order we have.  So call me spoiled.  Just that now that the intake is off it would be a good time to install a boost fitting.   Not to mention an EGT fitting that I can cap off till I get a gage.  Any suggestions on what to install in the exhaust for that, sizes? I just rebuilt my 1.6 Ecodiesel, yea I know no fun but it was the right price.  So with the engine out now is a good time to do all this.

It's an old topic, but I would like to "boost" some new life into it

I have a 1V engine and would like to install a boost gauge. Because I do not have that pressurized tube between turbo/inlet manifold and LDA I cannot use that to "T" for the boost gauge line.

Anybody a good idea or suggestion where to get the reading from?

Hi all. I'm trying to install a boost controller to my aaz with kkk24. I read the above posts and am a bit confused. If i tee into this line, will it not also bleed off to the waste gate as well as to atmosphere??? Or do i just connect a pipe to the turbo and let it vent to atmosphere through the boost valve and forget about the wastegate altogether???
