Hi, Has anybody ever bought a tiny-tach? My rabbit doesn't have a stock tach so I found these digital tachs for $65US, they clamp to an injector line and sense the pulse, it's in the mail now. Is it ok to turn the residual screw all the way in? I did it and nothing bad happened, do the the EGTs get to high on long hills? Will a pacesetter header for a gasser work on a 1.6D NA? I like power but high mileage and reliability are my main concern.
Anybody wanna hear about my rabbits background? I found it in a junkyard with 125,000mi on it were it had sat for 12 years with parts missing and I had no idea what it needed. So I tore it apart in March of '06 in my Dads shop and found that it needed a head, IP, intermediate shaft, rad fan and lots of misc parts. The interior was moldy and missing the drivers seat but the exterior is pretty nice. I got a new head with cam, valves and springs for $250 on ebay, is top line heads any good? Anyhow, about the end of April and $1500 later I had it on the road. I drove it from Alaska to Idaho and back to Alaska in June and decided to do a ring job 'cause it was burning oil. I've gone 15,000mi in it and the only problem I had was air kept getting in the IP (I got it used on ebay). Since then I've done struts, shocks, shift linkage and lots of tinkering. I usually get 40-45mpg summer and winter. It has a FN code tranny, is that high or low geared? Boring stuff huh? thanks for any input

Where did you find that tach? It sounds very useful compared to the ones that run off the alternator.
A header will work on your rabbit, but due to the vibrations of a diesel it may not last very long. Your best bet is to get a 4:2:1 exhaust manifold/downpipe setup. They came on most sciroccos and alot of the older german rabbits.
Way to save a rabbit
The FN can either have close or tall ratios. It depends on what year it was built. Pre 1981 has horrible close gearing, similar to the GTI trannys but post 1981 has a very nice tall fifth. I've owned both at the same time unfortunatly. I accidently installed the short ratio in my rabbit, it screams on the highway, then I sold the tall ratio one

Here's the website for the tach,
www.tinytach.com. They update once every second which is slow but ok for driving lazy.
What is a 4:2:1 exhaust?
I've heard you can tell when the tranny was made by looking at the numbers next to the code but they don't make sense to me.
Is there some kind of spoiler that will keep dust and snow off the back window?
Is it normal for the cam belt to ride on the edge of the IP sprocket, the IP shaft is sloppy front to back which makes the belt move out.

I have one I bought a while back, used it on my 84 TD. It worked good when I set it up under the hood but I never got it working very well when I installed it inside. I used a 9 volt battery inside to power it, maybe that was the problem.

From the computer you need to upload them to a web hosting site
I use
www.photobucket.com it's free and easy to use. Make yourself an account and then upload the pictures from your computer to your photobucket account. Then you just need to post the links toy our photobucket account on here
I'm confused as to what you did with the 9V....
The 4:2:1 is the exhasut manifold and downpipe.
Something like this
I think that one is for a mk3 but same idea

Greetings neighbour!
Do you run your diesel during the winter months as well? I stopped in order to extend her life a little longer..so just summer season now.
Cheers

yep, I run it year round, the coldest I started it was -36F. I have an oil pan, block and battery heater and I plug it in all night but it still hurts me to start it that cold.
I'll get some pic on here soon.
The tiny-tach is supposed to use anywere from 6-50V DC. I don't know why 9V didn't work for Fisher
EDIT: I just tried posting some pics with photobucket and I couldn't even upload 'em. I'm not a computer wiz. hehe. I'll get it done soon I hope.

if the ip shaft is sloppy, your pump must be leaking/sucking air
if i were you i'd spring for a newer rebuilt pump. ultra low sulphur diesel is a horrible thing for older non-rebuilt pumps

you have to resize the picture on your computer, then upload the smaller version.
I sent you an IM regarding that, but that was before I read this, so you can dsregard the IM
