How to tell a TD block from N/A
« on: December 15, 2006, 06:20:59 pm »
I have heard to look on the back side of the block for TD. but was wondering if there is any other way to tell. My uncle has a 1.6TD but it doesn't say TD on the block it just say 16D just wondering if someone just put the TD stuff on an N/A block. Thanks for the help.

i believe that both the 1.6d and td block are exactly the same. only the necessary equipment for a turbocharged engine is fitted in the last one. I own now a td, and had a D, and can't tell the difference between both

The only way to tell might be to drop the pan and look for oil squirters

Look for the engine code at top right side of block just below water outlet and post the code. 1.6L  Diesel engines sold in USA and German imports start with MF,JX,JR,CY,IV,RA,SB. all have oil squirters.

Hi,

Maybe this will help.  I have both a 1.9 NA and a 1.9TD (AAZ) engines, brand new.  On the back of the block, I see 1.9D/TD on the TD engine, cast into the block,  and there is an accommodation for the turbo return oil flow to the oil sump through a banjo fitting on the back of the block  on the TD engine.  On the 1.9 D NA engine, there is no such accommodation for the oil return flow, and the casting is "1.9 D" only.  I don't know about the 1.6 D NA or TD, although I have both of them as well.

By the way, I may be willing to sell the 1.9 NA engine, (brand new, unused, long block, still on pallet) but I haven't decided yet.  I paid $1,700.00 US for it, and may be willling to part with it for COST plus shipping. :P

pulling the oil pan and checking for the oil squirters, on the 1.6's it says 1.6d on them no matter what, unless it's an older td usually cy's are like this it will say 16d, which gave me a scare when i bought my motor but i had to take the oil pan off and found the squirters and checked the engine code.  the best and easiest way to go is with the engine code, and all of them are listed above

checking the code will def. save you alot more time than pulling the pan, fishing/looking up in, etc...
