Pulled the head today to get at serious oil consumption issues. Head will need guides and new valves. Okay that is not too bad. Pulled #4 piston out of the bore. Bore is out of concentricity by a couple of thousanths of an inch. I would really like to just drop a new set of rings in and drive the damn thing. Don't really want to bore as there is more expense for O/S pistons and all the work to do the full teardown. Any other experiences out there? Don't tell me to do it unless you have a horror story of your own. I have enough experience rebuilding things to know that the full job gets very expensive and labour intensive and hey it is a 20 year old car!!
usually you can get away with new rings. maybe go with total seal rings and a light honing of the cylinder wall. the ring gap on your motor is probably huge if it hasnt been done in a while, and that can account for some blowby, and the fact that your cylinder is becoming a bit oval can account for some too.
ideally you would want to do the full rebuild on the motor, because it would last you at least 300'000km, great fuel mileage, great performance, and easy cold starts
