i noticed the non td pump and the fact that it looked stock. i think that he through on badges and through on a turbo when he rebuilt the head. looks pretty close to my car though.

or rather, you could do a search on the VIN
if it was originally a 1.6TD, then quite possibly the pump was replaced with an N/A pump.
Free VIN Check Results:

Another tidbit of knowledge for factory TD Rabbits is that they have a low coolant idiot light in the instrument cluster, like that one does. N/A Rabbits don't.
Just thought I would share.
Wish my TD Rabbit was a 2 door, but 4 doors are convenient.
Can't believe it is still at $1000.

my rabbit has a low coolant light, but it's an automatic and they seem to have extra goodies that the manuals didn't get

you know what though... come to think of it. there could be two scenario's here.
1. td motor blown, replaced with N/A motor, and whoever did it decided just to put the turbo back on because it just fit.
2. injection pump failed (more probable with new ulsd or bio)
seeing the engine code would definitely rule everything out though

Trevor,
That's cool to know about Diesel automatics Rabbits. Wonder how many were automatics?
jtanquay,
It would be nice to know the engine code on that Rabbit.
I know mine is factory because I got the window sticker and build sheet when I got the car. I also did a carfax just because.

Folks,
I bought the car. Yes, it does have a cheezy GTI grill and Scirocco Steering Wheel. Chrome Bumpers were removed. I will put in a 4 button steering wheel with the turbo diesel center. I will put on north american big black metal bumpers (sourced from a GTI...close enough to OEM...I don't want chrome ones). I will remove the GTI grill and replace with an eggrate grill from a VW Caddy SportTruck. I have a real nice set of magnesium snowflakes for it too. That's as non stock as the exterior/interior will get for now.
The IP is NA that is on it presently for the break-in period following the head rebuild. The stock TD IP is included. This will be installed once I get the car into Mexico. I do not want to ruin the TD IP with low sulfer diesel in the US. I don't think low sulfer diesel will destroy the NA IP before I get the car from NY to Sonora Mexico. Once I'm in Mexico, no low sulfer diesel, I can take my time having the IP rebuilt for the low sulfer diesel back in the US (ie. have the seals changed and pump reworked by Giles).
Here's is a link about the car posted elsewhere.

low sulfur fuel isn't gonna make your car explode, i think it's more of a myth than anything

no, but it does eat away at the seals of the IP, causing leaks.

ULSD just has lower lubricity. If your that worried about it run some stanadyne in it. Or just dump half a bottle of veg oil in the tank with the fill up.
