One of my exhaust manifold gaskets burned out, so I'm going to need to remove my manifold to replace it. This is the perfect opportunity to install an EGT probe since it's already apart. Money's a bit tight right now, so I don't plan on purchasing the gauges themselves until a few months, so I was just going to buy a thermocouple and install it that way it's ready to go when I do get the gauges.

So... I was figuring on getting this:

Which I read in another post works very well and is super quick to react.

And then, eventually connecting it to one of these:

Anyone see a problem with this idea?

You could even just drill/tap the manifold while it's off and stuff a pipe plug in there until you get the gage and sender.... might be cheaper for now.

Yeah but I can swing the $30 for the probe and it'll make it easier to complete the install. No need to even go under the car. Just wire it up.

This is the setup I'm getting next summer or this winter if I have cash to make my own custom tubular exhaust manifold.

Total of about $78 which is the same the VDO gauge you want is selling for alone. From what I've read it's a very accurate and fast setup.

oh its accurate! fast too... just take a small torch and hold it up to it..

i did get it to screw up a bit though... by showing it short bursts of heat... but you would never get that in normal driving conditions.. or even race conditions because who would stomp the pedal in 1 second intervals? :lol: (actually i dont want to know who would do that...)

Yeah but is it the probe or the gauge that makes it react so quick. Because the westach gauge is fugly and looks kinda hard to read with that tiny needle and writing.

i bet a dremel could change that very easily haha i have a rubber 3 gauge pod, it's nice you don't need anything to mount the gauges in place because the rubber just holds it there.

amen. it is pretty fugly... but it works and works real well. the whole kit is very sensitive, and well made. If it has to work in an aircraft, it has to be able to last a long time, and be accurate. who needs a cheap thermocouple & gauge in a cockpit when you're up high in the sky? you can't just pull over and adjust it...

i would take useability over vanity anyday!
