Im swapping a n/a 1.6 out of an busted up 82 rabbit into an 84 gti shell for my winter car.

I have a fuel cell and would like to use it for the winter so I can swap a 16v in during the warmer months,
so my question is since there is no  real fuel pump in a diesel, would I just plumb 2 lines straight to the engine bay?

Personally I'm just wondering why you'd want to do that in the first place. Gearing between the two isn't going to be very good for both at once, and any compromise is just going to suck on both ends. Plus sharing a fuel tank  you may end up with diesel in your gasser and gas in your diesel, neither of which is really a good idea...

well if you really want to do it, go for it.  just plumb the lines and install the fuel filter.. you might want to get a prime bulb on one of the lines though to make it easier... that way you just squeeze it until the lines/pump are primed.

dont know why you'd want to run diesel in the winter and vr6 in the summer... i guess it is more powerful, but definitely sucks economy wise :)

You'd probably want to have some sort of shut off on the cell. It will probably run out first and then the pump will be sucking massive amounts of air into your pump.
Maybe if you put a T fitting on the retun line to the main tank with a one way valve. That way the cell empties into the tank :?:

I need the 1.6 only to last the winter, then the body will be a track car.

and I am not sold on my summer 16v idea, its just somthing I have easy access to. I might put a td in, so I can keep the car a diesel.

The cell I have has 2 fittings close to the bottom, and one on top. I take it I use one fitting on the bottom to go to the filter in the engine bay, the other bottom fitting for return fuel, and the one on top as a vent?

yea those 2 fittings on the bottom can be used for "supply " and "return"
and the top is the vent,correct
im doin one of those cheapo summit 8 gallon cells too
but im sinking it in the floor where the right rear passenger would sit
then relocating the filler neck to the side of the 1/4 panel so its a straight shot into the cell(picture the filler neck/cap assy  moved forward like 2 or 3 feet)
then with the stock tank removed its easy to run a straighter exhaust up over the axle beam
