Well, in that case, i doubt you had an EGT related failure. I suspect the valves/guides were incorrectly installed. Do it your self, or find another shop.

I wish I had the seat cutting and valve facing equipment because I would do it myself. I should probably just bite the bullet and sbuy the stuff. Anybody got ideas on where to find stuff like that? I accustomed to using the kind of cutter that has the tungsten carbide bits and use the valve guide as a centering point.. Any particular brand that are better than others?

I've had good results just lapping in the new valves with out remachining the valve seats. test fit your valves in the guides that are in the head now. They should slide easily with a spot of oil.

You could try all new valves, reaming the tight guides, and lapping in the valves. Probably not the most correct way to do it, but it has served me well. If you have a couple seats that don't look like the contact area is wide enough, just remachine those.

Actually I found a company that sells a really sweet setup for cutting seats and driving / reaming guides. It's less than 400 bucks for the setup and uses tungsten carbide bits like a brake machine, and will do virtually any VW motor (gas diesel etc). I've used this setup before at a freind's shop and it's second to none..

The guy I spoke with was extremely knowledgeable and knew exactly what I was talking about.. We debated the use of stones etc and talked a bit of theory.. anyway.. This solves at least one part of my problem..
