Cheap car transportation?
« on: October 24, 2004, 03:59:33 pm »
Well, the time has come, finally, for me to plan a trip back out to Maryland to pick up my Scirocco which has been waiting patiently for me to rescue it.  I spent so much time screwing around trying to find a job that I'm a few months behind on where I wanted to be with it, but I guess better late than never.  :)

I'm sure some of you have had more experience in transporting cars than me.  I was planning on renting a tow dolly from U-Haul, something like $60.00 or so give or take for the weekend.  Not a bad deal, but I also dont have a suitable truck to tow it with.  A friend of my Mom's has an 04 Expedition which is more than capable of towing it back, but the fuel milage will kill me, and on top of that, my girlfriend and I are also going to try to bring back with us a new washing machine and a small table-mounted wood lathe.  (both are sitting at her parents house)  I dont think there is enough room in the Expedition for that stuff.  A big truck or cargo van would be great but most prices for renting something like that, plus a towing rig is WAY out of my budget.   It's about a 400 mile trip one way.  The Scirocco ran well (finally) when I left it, but it's not registered, the tires are pretty dry rotted, and I doubt I could trust it on a 400 mile trip after I have only put about 10 miles on it since I bought it.  Anyone have a suggestion for cheap and easy transport options?  I plan on asking some people at work tomorrow and see if they have any "connections" where maybe I could rent/borrow a diesel pickup.  Thanks for the input all-
