1.6 torque

I am going to be building a VW diesel to be installed in a Toyota Pickup. I am planning on using a 1.6 as they are easier and cheaper to get. I plan on rebuilding the engine before installing.
Questions:
Will I be able to get 110hp and 140ft/lb troque from a 1.6? That would match the 2.4 L gas that is in the truck now or will I need to go with a 1.9?
Is there an advantage to using a 1.9L pump on a 1.6? This will allow for more fuel thus I can run more boost? or can I get the same results with a 1.6 pump set up properly?

the 1.9 will put out more power, and especially more power down low. but 110 and 140 is easily achievable with these motors

a 1.9 pump on the 1.6 will help, just put the 1.6 lda components on the 1.9 pump

if you're looking to haul stuff, go with a 1.9. my mechanic did a perkins diesel swap on a mazda pickup... that thing had mad torque! it was a 2.2L diesel engine 4 cyl. the frame would break before the motor/trans gave in.
with the 1.6td, they are meant for speed really, but can be just as good for towing. things you need to watch for are overheating when carrying a load up a steep incline, etc.
it would also be recommended that you install a turbo that spools up down low, rather than up top. it would really help with towing big loads.
other than that, get a Giles pump! :wink:

I am installing the diesel for the economics of it more then then for towing. I also love to work on diesel engines. I would be happy if I can match the power that I have now with the gas 2.4L that is in it. I have a K03 turbo off a 1.9 to put on it as well as a 1.9 pump if needed. I am going for milage not towing capacity. All I need now is the engine........

Flash... It's certainly possible to get that type of power from the 1.6TD. I just had my engine dyno'd and got just over 100 hp and over 140 ft/lbs of torque at the wheels with only minor adjustments, larger exhaust, more boost and an intercooler. Engine and pump are stock (for now).
My caddy isn't a tire shredding beast by any means, but I'm always a bit surprised by the torque and oomph it's got at any RPM.

the 1.6 motor is definitely more fuel efficient than the 1.9.
go with the 1.6 motor and you will be happy. the size/weight of the toyota body will obviously make the 1.6 work pretty hard, and so you might want to upgrade the rad, and/or add an air oil cooler, instead of the original coolant oil cooler. anything to keep the motor cooler is always good for longetivity, within reason of course. (keep it as close to operating temperature as possible)

Well I have found a hydraulic 1.6L that is in need of a rebuild. I am going to put the 1.9 pump with LDA on it. As well as the K03 turbo. I will put some new piston and bearings in it as well as a steel head gasket. Probebly get the head rebuilt as well.
Is it a common thing to put bigger valves in or is that a waste of time with a turbo?
Is there anything else I should do for a reliable powerful engine?
Where is a good place to get engine parts, rebuild kits ect...

if you want to stick bigger valves on go for it. $$$?
helping it breathe better will only make it perform better

is the motor originally a turbo? if its not, then you will need an intercooler, larger exhaust, an external oil cooler, and if you rebuild it, use turbo pistons.

It is a turbo motor so I should be good. I will check into the valves but if to much money I will skip it.

i've had a lot of trouble trying to get a 1.9 pump to fit my motor... i'd personally recommend going with the 1.6 pump unless you know someone who works at a machine shop.
while it does line up, cars with a/c dont have much clearance for the 1.9's pump advance mechanism (you'd have to grind some parts of the bracket off)
just little annoying things... if you had a motor to play around with, and some time, you could probably get it to work

I have a bit of a machine shop in my garage (13X36 lathe and Bridgeport mill) that is how I am going to make the adapter plates and eng mounts for the Toyota install. I think I will leave the valves as was said heat gets trapped in the chamber which causes cracking. Bigger valves will take more meat out of the head which will not help the situation. Depending how I feel I may make a custom exhaust manifold for the turbo as well. Not sue if that will be worth the work though.
