A guy at work wants to sell his MkII Jetta because the heater doesnt heat but the blower motor does work. He has flushed the core so I dont think thats plugged and he replaced the radiator(?). The car is nice other than that and he will sell it cheap ($250). Just want to know from people smarter than me if this is a common problem and what I should look for. Cant drive it with no heat. ITS COOOOOLD!
Check the blend door adjustments. Also check that the blend door still has the foam covering on it, it rots away and falls off leaving large holes for air to bypass the heater core, very common problem with mk2's.
I chased crappy heat output in my car for 2 years. I finally broke down and pulled the dash. I found a screw lodged in the blend door that wouldn't allow it to close properly. It was probably in there since the car was assembled and was also probably the reason the car was traded with low miles on it, previous owner couldn't stand the cold...
Is the thermostat good?
The flap material rotting off is definitly a common problem
Thank you for your input and advice. I will do the thermostat and oring this weekend, but the engine does warm up fine. Where will I find the blend door and how difficult is it to get to? And where can I buy the foam other than the dealer?
i recommend going with vw oem 87C thermostat. well worth it! dont go with a cheapie thermostat... or you will regret it

Definitly, although I like the 92, toast warm
The flaps are behind your center console in that black box. They are a major pain to get to. You need to remove the dash (I think) and then remove that black box. There are 2 10mm bolts holding it in that are on the firewall inside the engine compartment. It's easiest to access them from below the car I find.
Oh yeah, if the car is warming up fine don't bother with the thermostat. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Because the new ones don't always work
well even with the 87C thermostat, my car overheats... i think a 92 would be overkill unless you lived in a really cold climate

of course i have figured out the main cause of my overheating issues... being that the thermoswitch needs to be replaced, and i need to re-install the ducting to the rad. i removed it when i changed the condensor because the rubber had rotted away.
