Question about 1.9TD -- self adjusting alternator pulley?

A friend of mine has the 1.9TD motor and his alternator belt is squeeling and is slipping. Can you tell me if the pulley is self adjusting (and needs to buy a new one), or can he manually adjust it somehow? Thanks guys.

My 97 1.9TD has the serpentine belt set up and has a tensioner. I know they sometimes get weak and need to be replaced...there is no adjusting them.
