1989 Jetta 1.6 non-turbo, black smoke under load
« on: April 11, 2008, 12:02:23 pm »
My Jetta has approx. 125k miles on it, has been pretty well taken care of, seems to run pretty well, however, it does emit quite a bit more smoke than my old '81 rabbit used to....the mileage isn't quite as good either.

Any recommendations on what to do to reduce/eliminate the black smoke & also, perhaps what to check to improve the mileage ?

I get < 40MPG combined city/road.....I used to get up to 50MPG with similar driving style with my old '81 rabbit.

Thanks in advance !

Thanks for all the replies, I will check all suggested and get back.....what about fuel injectors, if they are the originals, could they be causing the black smoke ?

I've replaced the air filter, but that didn't really help.  If I remove the fuel injectors, how can I tell if they are bad, vs. just need cleaning ?
