The ratchet on my E-brake seems to be broken or missing parts but I dont know what ones. i can pull it up and manually flip the catch down to lock it but it will not do it by itself. once it is locked i can ush the button in and it will unlock. btw the button/rod/spring assembly can come out quite easily. does anybody know how to fix it? or should i get one at the local VW junkyard?

This happened on my parents 92 GTI and I'd assume it's a similar. The pawl chipped half of it's tip off so it would always skip to the side when I'd let go it would not grab. I think to fix it I just pounded the rivet tighter that it pivots on. Still works today. I don't know if that's your problem but might be worth looking at.
