Car needs exhaust... a few questions...
« on: November 22, 2006, 05:42:15 pm »
So I found a huge crack in the exhaust and its hanging down.  It needs to get replaced.

Is it worth it to get a larger diameter exhaust?  And how loud will it be without a muffler or resonator?  Should I get rid of both, or just the muffler on the end?

I'm getting this done tomorrow sometime so let me know whats best.  Thanks guys.

Turbo diesel.  I know turbos quiet down an exhaust a half decent amount, but when the muffler fell off my N/A diesel it sounded like a friggin tractor.

But I've read of the TD guys doing "mufflerectomy"'s so it must be quiet enough to be driven mostly daily.

Any ideas?

Funny stuff!

FWIW, I did a mufflerectomy in the spring, and *some unknown villain who has yet to be caught by the local constabulatory* also hollowed out my cat. I don't find it loud at all, nor does my wife. It's deep and throaty, but that's about it.

What's not to love about deep & throaty??

Well, as of now, theres a gaping hole in the exhaust, and I dont find it loud at all.

I was used to my VR6T with a 3" downpipe off the T04e turbo and straight out the side, belching flames and noxious fumes.  So when I hopped into my stock N/A diesel with a brand new exhaust system, it seemed whisper quiet.  And now, my TD (when the muffler was working) sounded much MUCH quietter than my regular diesel.  So I figure with a new exhaust system, sans muffler, should be close to my current cracked and hole-y exhaust.

i think the only people who really care about holes in the exhaust are the emissions check places...

Well, I did it...  saved the resonator and got rid of the muffler.

Glad I did.  The turbo spools up faster, you can hear it a lot more in the exhaust, and its not all that loud.  It gets loud on hard acceleration, but mild acceleration and cruising, its almost as quiet as stock.  It's perfect.

FWIW, I took a stock system off my Rabbit Pickup and installed a PP downpipe and custom bent 2.25" pipe with the largest Magnaflow muffler that would fit. It is slightly louder, but the performance boost was well worth it.

I'm going to a muffler shop this afternoon to get a 2.5" inch setup to go with the PP downpipe.

I'm hoping a resonator where the cat was, and a straight through type Magnaflow muffler should do the trick, and keep noise close to stock.
