Hello
if you have read my first post you will know that my mk1 is due to have an engine swap for a mk2 turbo engine. Haynes do not do a manual for either the mk1 or mk2 golf turbo diesel so I will be getting a Robert Bently manual. Which manual should I get which will be the most usefull? There is two that I'm looking at the mk1 (rabbit as you guys call it) diesel which includes the turbo diesel, or the mk2 diesel which covers the turbo model. The engine I am using is from a 1990 mk2 GTD code: SB.
what code is the mk1 turbo diesel engine? and how similar is it to the mk2? do the manuals cover only US models or will they be the same for the UK? I am trying to work to a pretty small budget so I would like to only buy one, if the mk1 turbo engine is similar enough to the mk2 then I will just get the mk1 manual.
Hopefully I havn't totally confused everyone and someone can clarify it all for me!
Cheers
Paul

Welcome, Paul...and if you think your '83 is slow, you should have driven my '80 1.5 n/a diesel...
As for the manuals, if you are planning to do a straight engine swap, without an engine rebuild, then I would definitely get the book for the MkI car. The engines are so similar that I wouldn't bother getting a second manual.
Hope that helps! Stan

cheers for your reply stan,
can anyone confirm the engine code for the mk1/A1 GTD (if there was one?) I beleive it is RA - 1.6 turbo intercooled
if it is can anyone tell me the difference, if any, between the SB engine from the mk2/A2 GTD they should both be 1.6 turbo intercooled and as stan said be very similar but I just want to make sure!
Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,
its GTD. off the CGTI forum, the A2 Bentley doesnt cover the SB, but the one it does cover seems quite similar, do a search on the CGTI forum as theres a link to an online version of the manual, I got mine from Amazon to do the cam belt on my GTD only to find it dosent cover the SB and I need a locking tool for the diesel pump anyway! That said the Bentley is far superior to the Haynes book of lies!

hey mate,
did you get the link for this site from my post on CGTI?
so there is no manual avaiable for our engines?
oh well I'm just gonna get the A1 bentley manual as thats obviously going to be the closest match to my car.
as for the diesel pump locking tool I din't bother with one I just used a bit of brass I'd been using as a drift and shoved that in to crack the nut, worked a treat!

Yeah Paul, I got to this site off your post on CGTi, Cheers.
Yep the RA (early) , and the SB (later) aint covered, I'm going to look into getting a copy of "Elsa-Win"? the VAG repair manual, or see if that Lindsay Porter full colour strip down book has the SB in.
