What types of oil to run in a 92 1.6TD?
« on: November 19, 2006, 04:08:53 pm »
Hey guys.

I'm just curious what kinds of oil you think is best for a 1.6TD?

Given that its turbo, I would guess synthetic is best to prevent coking once the car is shut off.  But thats typically for turbo gas engines and I dont know if that applies to diesels.  Is this true?  Or is it best to use "Diesel Oil" or just regular oil?  Also, what weight is best for the winter?  I would assume 10w30 to be the best for the cold weather coming up.

Thanks.

Only use a diesel oil for sure.  If you use one that says "VW 505.00" on the back you will be set for a long while to come.  Chances are that any 505.00 you find will be 5w40, there are other viscosities but they are harder to come by.

That said, you could still use a good 0w40 like Shell Rotella TSB if you get really cold weather (it isn't 505.00 rated) but its supposed to be a great diesel rated oil.  I plan on trying it out on my next oil change.
Waiting for a bigger better diesel to come along.

So, just look for the VW 505.00 on the back?

Do I not need to worry about the turbo coking up the oil like it might on a gasoline engine?

Ideally we'd all have EGT gauges and shut down when the turbo is cooled off, but, if you haven't been driving hard let it idle for 10-15 seconds then shut it off.  I wait till mine hits 300F or less then shut it off, since the oil is going to be way cooler than the probe in the manifold.  As long as the oil is diesel rated it will not coke up the turbo since diesels run cooler and oils have very high boiling points these days.

Rotella, Delo any diesel rated oil will work fine. Synthetic is not a must but a better oil to go with if you can afford it and if you live in a colder climate.  The oils of today have come a long way from the days of the early 90's.

same here :).  rotella is excellent!  on my old jetta it did not burn oil, and was pretty easy to start in the winter time.  0w40 grade we get here in Canada is thin enough not to bog cold starts, and does not burn like normal oils will.  I put around 7000km on that oil and it was always powerful.  oil level did go down around the 5000km mark, but that was probably because of blowby from not honing the cyls... and just because it could have used an overbore too...
