Can someone do an idiots guide to tuning the 1.6TD?
« on: November 17, 2006, 02:18:07 pm »
I've had a read through some of the threads on here and they look way more complicated than anything i've had a go at before. I need pics as well as loads of text as i can be the stupidest muppet some times!

I dont understand what all the abreviations are to start with - and my car is my daily driver (which i commute in - nearly 100 miles a day) and i cant screw things up!

A quick guide written for Vanagon owners, but the same principles still apply, only bone of contention is if yours has hydraulic lifters or not, all Vanagon D and TD models have buskets and shims hence the page saying so.

Just read through the 1.9 tuning guide.

I'm going to do the boost gauge and BOV mod first - then fueling - then wastegate adjustment and see how confident i feel from there - i'm just a little worried about cocking up the governer!

yeah i don't really wanna mess with the governor either, trust me though, if you add more boost, say put it at 15 pounds, and give it the right fueling, and get the lda tuned in really nice, you'll be really happy.  but you will always thirst for more haha

I did an acceleration test today to see how good my mid range was and arecorded it on my phone - I did 60mph > 80mph in 10 seconds!

I'll see how good it is and do the same test after every mod!

The video of my test is going on youtube later!

um your temp gauge is reading a bit... low? going 160, my car's temp gauge would be reading quite high...

Mine has always read quite low - i'd only done about 10 miles from cold and it was a freezing day - roads had been wel salted and the blow through the grill would keep the engine cold!

Does denser air make a difference to a diesel like it does with my g40? (foggy days = more power!)

theoretically denser air should give you more power, to the best of my knowledge at least. It is like having an intercooler, only much larger and with less work involved.
