Vanagon/T3 TD Exhaust quandry.

Just had some nice stainless steel tailpipes made for the 1.6TD T3 exhaust system, trouble is my backbox (Muffler to you lot!) was a bit corroded and the bolts for the tailpipe didn't look like they would come apart, so I thought bollocks to it and I'llfit a new box.

New box comes and you have a nosey at it as you do.. Had a look inside and it's a long straight silencer, inside is a perforated tube that runs the length of the silencer but about 6" in there is a round steel disc welded in I presume to direct exhaust gasses through the silncer rather than travel straight through.

So, there me wondering if there really is much to gain by removing the disc and having the exhaust basically a straight through box.

The van is a camper so I don't really want much more noise, anyone one had any experience with this, or any other box?

Man, I saw "T3" and was immediately thinking Squareback/Fastback/Notchback/T34 Ghia, not variant on the bus/van series. :p

Anywho, relevant to the question: Experience with a gasser with a rotted out box. I poked a wire in there and broke several of the deflecting plates as they it really wasn't doing anything anymore, but I didn't want to just take the whole thing off and have exhaust vented underneath the car. I really wish I hadn't.

Obviously the thing got louder, but I also got quite a bit of higher pitched sound added in the mix. I think what is/was happening was the exhaust was blowing past the edges of the baffles and causing them to vibrate quickly, producing a high-pitched note to go along with the deeper exhaust belch. It was highly annoying.

Take that as you will.
