Bought a ''new'' 87 Jetta TD, some issues with it...

First off, it has 288 000km on the engine, no visible HG leaks or outside oil/coolant leaks. Previous owner said it burned a bit of oil, to just check it once a month. Starts on the first crank with the cold start out so I guess it has good compression.

The car won't start if the cold start handle is in. Once started with the handle out, it smokes like a pig for the first 30 seconds (white smoke). If I push the handle back in, idle starts to go down, get lumpy and sometimes dies if the engine is cold. If the engine is hot it'll idle very roughly.

Idle with the handle completely out is around 1000rpm and very smooth. Idles around 750rpm with the handle in.

Here's what I'm thinking: injectors need to be replaced because they are probably the original ones, re-time the pump and check the glow plugs.I already have GTD rebuilt injectors and new glow plugs sitting at home

What do you guys think?

I think it's the timing. I'd first try adjusting it to make sure that was the problem, then when you install the new parts you'll be able to tell how worn the old ones were

BTW the TD I just bought has 500k kms on it and starts just fine :D

Two months after the event, you've probably found your answer  :D   I just thought I'd add my 2p and say that it sounds like your glow plugs might have been Donalded.
Cheers,
