Install it in the freeze plug you can get at easiest.
Drain coolant.
Knock a sharp screwdriver through the old freeze plug and pry it out (Sometimes that is as easy as it sounds). Dont drop it inside the water passage.
Little sandpaper to clean the hole.
Push the block heater into the hole and tighten it. Some have an o-ring and just need to be tight enough that the pressure can't dislodge it. Some are a compressible rubber plug and need to be tight enough to expand tightly into the hole.
refill coolant.
Route the power cord around hot, sharp and rotating bits, then dangle the plug from the edge of the hood in the traditional 'I'm a Canadian' manner.
Don't drive to work with the extension cord dragging behind you, people will laugh.
FWIW, I bought a 200 watt magnetic heater from princess auto for $29. Its not meant to be left attached when you drive, but it hasnt fallen off in the last few hundred KM. It provides enough heat for my local.
