Tell me about injectors.
« on: November 01, 2006, 02:44:07 pm »
I'm thinking of replacing the injectors on my 1.6TD. I bought the engine used, and I have no idea how long they've been in there. They look rusty and crappy so I'm assuming they're quite old. As of right now the car runs smooth and dosent smoke excessively or anything like that, but I figured since I'm in the pursuit for more power and better mileage, start here first.

First question. Which injectors should I get? I've seen references to GTD injectors, stock injectors, mercedes injectors, blah blah blah... What's a good reason to pick one over another?

Also, here's the part that worries me. One of my injector bosses is visibly cracked. What are the odds of me being able to remove the old injector, and properly torque the new one without that crack causing me a problem. I'm not taking the head off to be re-welded. In fact I was just thinking of sealing the crack with JB weld. I've heard an impact gun on a low setting is the right way to go when removing injectors.

What are some good (cheap) places to buy injectors?

alot of people like doing the gtd nozzles, i kinda question how much difference they make, haven't really seen any hard proven numbers on them, and all the reviews i have read are mixed, they say it makes it different, but not necessarily faster, but that is just what i have read
01 Jetta TDI 100% stock daily
81 Rabbit:TDI-M ported head, Frank06 cam, PD intake, hybrid T3 turbo, Renault intercooler, Syl20 11mm pump, light weight fw, and yellow California Clutch clutch kit

While I have no personal experience I've heard that the reason why the GTD nozzles are so popular is because people take their old crappy ones out and put in GTD nozzles, so of course they will notice an improvement. But had they had brand new stock injectors and then put in GTD nozzles there might not have even been a differance. Again, that's just what I've heard

I don't know anything, but think of this: if VW engineers developed new nozzles for the most powerful version of the 1.6L diesel motor that has got to be for some reason...

I recently purchased rebuilt TD injectors from Jack at vwdieselparts.com.  As far as the GTD nozzles go, I have looked at a dyno graph on this site and I believe the gains were in the high RPM range (maybe 5hp).

I'd be very curious to know about those Mercedes injectors. People have made anecdotal refernces to them, but I haven't heard about any testing.

I bought a head where the injector boss broke right off, probably started out as a simple crack. I'd strongly recommend considering getting it fixed while you still can. It's less then $100 in replacement parts (HG, Bolts, timing belt)
